Laredo Bucks News Release
AUSTIN, Texas - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks got a pair of goals from forward Jeff Bes as they beat the Austin Ice Bats 3-1 at the Chaparral Ice Center on Friday night. Goalie Kevin Reiter was outstanding as the Bucks won for the tenth time in eleven games, and 15th time in the last 18. Laredo is a Southern Conference best 24-9-2 with 50 points and they lead the Southeast Division by nine points. The Bucks are home on Saturday against the Wichita Thunder. Face off set for 7:30 p.m. The Bucks are offering season tickets starting at $125 dollars. For more info call (956)-718-BUCK (2825).
The Bucks spent much of the first period on the penalty kill as they stopped four Austin power play chances to keep the game scoreless after one frame.
In the second period the Bucks survived four more Austin power play chances, including a 44 second two-man advantage, to keep in the game. Late in the frame Laredo capitalized on a power play chance of their own as rookie forward Chris Korchinski found Bes cutting in front for a tip in tally at 17:54 to make it 1-0 Bucks. It was the eighth of the season for Bes.
The Ice Bats tied the game in the third period when forward John McNabb scored on a wrist shot from just inside the right circle at 6:25. The Bucks came back as defenseman Steve Weidlich made a great lead pass to Korchinski who cut down the right wing and scored on a breakaway with a wrist shot at 13:02. His 15th of the season put Laredo ahead 2-1. Late in the game Austin had another power play chance and pulled the goalie for a two man advantage, but Bes scored into the empty net at 19:58 to seal the win. FINAL SCORE Laredo 3, Austin 1.
Reiter was rock solid in net stopping 33 of 34 shots and improving to 6-2-0. Tony Quesada played well, allowing two goals on 31 shots, but fell to 0-2-0. The Bucks were 1-7 on the power play while Austin was 0-11. The Ice Bats out shot the Bucks 34-32.
