CornBelters go wild in Washington in 14-2 victory

The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, continued their trend of high-scoring offense as they opened a six-game road trip with an 14-2 win over the Washington Wild Things at Consol Energy Park in Washington, Pennsylvania.

Daniel Cox started the scoring with a two-run homer in the first, scoring Frank Martinez, who had singled.

The 'Belters put three more across in the third. Cox led off with a walk, moved to second on a Steve Alexander ground out and scored on a double by Jeff Dunbar. Colin Moro hit his second home run of the season to score Dunbar.

The Wild Things put up a run in the third when the inning was extended when Normal could not finish a double play which kept Kevyn Feiner on the base paths, and scored on a two-out single by Eric Stephens to cut the 'Belters lead to 5-1.

Normal made it 10-1 by adding five more tallies in the fourth. Alvaro Ramirez and Frank Martinez singled, Daniel Cox reached on an error and Steve Alexander's ground ball scored a run. Jeff Dunbar collected his second RBI double of the game, then Asif Shah homered to make the score 10-1 and chase Washington starter Justin Hall from the game.

Another CornBelter run plated in the fifth when Tyler Keeble led off with a single and scored on an Alvaro Ramirez base hit. The 'Belters put three more across in the the sixth when Jeff Dunbar hit his third double of the game, followed by an Asif Shah walk. Tyler Keeble doubled in one run and Brad Agustin singled in two more to increase the lead to 14-1.

The Wild Things got back on the board with a solo home run by Scott Lawson to lead off the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 14-2.

Brett Lester improved to 3-1 with the win. Justin Hall took the loss to fall to 3-2. The CornBelters send right-hander Jon Berger to the hill on Saturday night against Wild Things righty Jason Santana. Game time is 5:35 p.m. Central with a 5:20 pre-game on WEZC-FM 95.9 and WJBC.com.
