Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves normally hot bats were cooled off by a superb pitching performance by the Akron Aeros, as the Aeros defeated Erie 3-0.

Three Akron pitchers combined for the first SeaWolves shutout defeat of the season with the majority effort coming from Matt Packer. Packer, who came into the game with two strong starts on the record against Erie, dominated the SeaWolves for seven innings, allowing just five hits and striking out a season high ten batters.

Erie had their own strong performance on the mound in Patrick Cooper, who finished the game with the loss after allowing three earned runs through eight innings of work. Going into the seventh inning, Cooper had thrown just over seventy pitches, until the Aeros finally strung together enough offense to escape with a victory.

Cedric Hunter led off the inning with a double, but Copper retired the next two batters with ease. Carlos Moncrief then drew a two out walk to set the stage for Roberto Perez, who doubled deep into center and cleared the bases.

With Akron up 2-0, James McCann attempted to start a rally in the bottom of the seventh when he reached base on an error. After moving into scoring position on his first stolen base of the year, Packer retired the next three in order to end the Erie threat.

The Aeros added an insurance run in the top of the eighth to make their lead 3-0. Jose Ramirez smacked a one out double and was brought home on a Tyler Holt single.

Rob Bryson and Bryce Stowell combined to shut out Erie in the last two innings while David Kopp kept Akron off the board in the ninth.

Erie will look to rebound with a win in game two of the four game set when Warwick Saupold (3-1, 2.67 ERA) takes on Akron starter Paulo Espino (1-1, 4.56 ERA) pitch on Saturday night at 7:05.
