Windsor Spitfires News Release

(Ottawa) The Spitfires deserved a little better fate than the one they got on Friday night at the Civic Centre.

Dalton Smith shovelled Saverio Posa, and apparently the puck, into the Windsor net just 88 seconds into overtime, giving the home side a comeback, 4-3 win.

Replays showed goalie John Cullen was bumped and lost his mask a few seconds before the puck was ruled in and the net flew off its moorings.

By rule, play is supposed to be stopped when a goalie loses his bucket.

Cullen was visibly upset when the goal was ruled good on the ice. And still a little ticked, later on.

"I didn't know I was playing in the 1940's tonight where goalies don't wear helmets," Cullen said after the game. "The game is on the line & the referee decides to sit on his whistle."

After a lengthy review, the call was upheld. And the Spits left with just a point after leading 3-1.

Goals by Alexander Khokhlachev (13), Brandon Devlin (3) and Brady Vail staked Windsor (13-13-3-1) to the two-goal lead after 20 minutes.

Ryan Van Stralen and Nicholas Foglia pulled Ottawa back to even with second and third period goals. Foglia's came with just 6:41 to play.

After firing 16 shots at Petr Mrazek in the first period, our guys managed just 11 in the final 40 minutes and overtime. Cullen made 35 saves on the night.
