Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Gary, Ind. - A controversial call in the fourth inning was ruled a double for Drew Martinez that plated the RailCats' only runs in a 2-1 win over Wichita on Tuesday morning. The RailCats have won three straight and have taken the first two games of the three-game series with Wichita.
CJ Ziegler led off the fourth inning with a solo homer to left off of RailCats starter Ari Ronick, his fourth of the season, to give Wichita a 1-0 lead.
The RailCats took the lead in the bottom of the inning on a play shrouded in controversy. Craig Maddox and Brian Kolb each singled in the inning and Martinez stepped to the plate with two out. He hit a line drive to left that left fielder Colt Loehrs attempted to catch on a dive. The ball ended up in his glove but it was ruled that he trapped it after it hit the ground. Maddox and Kolb scored and Martinez landed on second with a two-run double. Wingnuts manager Kevin Hooper was ejected while arguing the call.
Ari Ronick recorded a quality start for the second consecutive day for a RailCats starter following Alain Quijano. Ronick allowed four hits, one run, and walked two in six innings. Ronick struck out a season-high four in his second start of the season.
Wingnuts starter Jon Link showed some impressive velocity on his way to a tough luck loss. In six innings the former Major Leaguer gave up two runs on six hits.
Taylor Sewitt, Estevan Uriegas and Marco Gonzalez each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the RailCats and Gonzalez went through the Wingnuts in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Kolb was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run after missing four games with a finger injury.
The RailCats will play an 11:10 am game for Kids Day on Wednesday morning. Right-hander Stephen Hiscock will take the ball for Gary against Wichita right-hander Chris Smith.
