Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - Jamie Cooke and Paul Rosebush each tallied twice as the Bakersfield Condors won their fifth straight game, defeating the Idaho Steelheads 5-3 in front of 4,463 fans at Centennial Garden on Sunday.
The Condors took a 2-0 lead midway through the first period with a pair of goals in the span of 1:03. Rosebush buried a slap shot from the slot and Cooke finished off a nice play by J.J. Wrobel, who drew three defenders towards him and floated a pass over for Cooke. Idaho netted their first of the night less than two minutes later, as Marty Flichel picked up a redirected shot and buried it. The score after one period was 2-1 Bakersfield.
Bakersfield struggled to get shots in the second period, but when they did, they mattered. Rosebush and Shawn Byram scored on the team's first two shots of the middle stanza. Byram came in on a two-on-one and buried a wrist shot to the top shelf for his 10th of the season. Idaho came back for another power play tally at 9:50 to cut the lead in half and make it 4-2. Cooke converted while the Condors were shorthanded to extend the lead back to three goals, swinging around the defense and cutting back across the crease to tuck it past goalie Jason Cugnet. One more Steelheads goal on the power play brought the score to 5-3 after 40 minutes.
The third period was scoreless, as the Condors held onto their lead. The Steelheads had two more power plays in the third period, but couldn't get much going. Meanwhile Kevin St. Pierre was sharp in net, stopping 28 shots in the game for his 20th victory of the season. Cugnett suffered the loss by allowing five goals on 18 shots. After the game, an auction was held for the team's Metal Blade warm up jerseys, raising $9,025 for the American Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
The Condors crept to within two points of second place San Diego, who was idle for the night. The Condors improved to 4-2 against the Steelheads this season, including wins in three of the last four meetings.
