IceHawks Topple Jackals 6-1

January 19, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals had to run out of gas at some point. They managed to get through their longest road trip of the year 4-2-0. But in their first game at home and fourth in five days this week, the Jackals succumbed to the Adirondack IceHawks 6-1 before 4,094 fans at the Coach USA Center Saturday.

Decked out in their brand new red third jerseys, the Jackals skated in front of the Twin Tiers faithful for the first time since January 5th. But the night, it turned out, belonged to the IceHawks. Adirondack opened up the scoring when Dominic Chiasson marked at 5:54 from Bogdan Rudenko and Ben Blais. Then Hugo Belanger put one home at 12:16 from Frank Littlejohn to finish the period off at 2-0 in favor of the IceHawks. Adirondack out shot the Jackals 15-8 over the first 20 minutes.

Andreas Sjolund scored twice to move Adirondack up 4-0 in the second period before Glenn Stewart finally got the Jackals on the board. His power play goal at 14:23 from Corey Neilson and Randy Murphy was his 12th of the season. Towards the end of the second period Elmira had many chances on the IceHawks goal, but either Jason Wolfe came up with key saves, or the puck wouldn't bounce the Jackals' way, and they still trailed at the break 4-1.

The third period turned out to be all IceHawks, as Hugo Belanger picked up his second goal of the game, and Rudenko added further injury with his 18th of the year with 2:45 remaining. Jeremy Symington was tagged with the loss for the Jackals, turning aside 39 of 45 shots while Wolfe improved to 5-1-1 against the Jackals with a 31 save performance.

The Jackals will host Port Huron on Sunday to finish off a five game in six days stretch. The Beacons and Jackals get the puck rolling at 4 pm, with pre-game show at 3:30 pm on your Home for Jackals Hockey, WiNGZ 104.9. The Jackals will then enjoy a break until they again host Adirondack on Thursday back at the Coach USA Center at 7 pm.
