Jackals Squeeze By Beacons In Shootout

January 19, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

Corey Neilson managed the only regulation goal for the Elmira Jackals on Sunday, helping them to a 2-1 shootout win over the Port Huron Beacons at the Coach USA Center.

The game ended a brutal five game in six day stretch for the Jackals that saw them in St. Charles, MO on Tuesday, Rockford, IL Wednesday, Muskegon, MI on Friday, then travel back home to play Adirondack last night and the Beacons today. In those five games, Elmira went 3-2, grabbing six of a possible ten points.

A scoreless first period saw Elmira out-chance and out-hustle the Beacons, but come away empty. Neilson broke the deadlock in the second stanza with a shot from the point that deflected off of a Beacon defender in front of the net at 6:15. Rob Guinn and David Lessard picked up the assists on the goal. Port Huron, meanwhile, finally got on the board at 6:58 of the third period when Brent Gretzky snuck a puck past Marco Emond on the power play. Gretzky's shot from the right circle went off the cuff of Emond's glove and bounded over the goal line. Scott Drevitch and Jason Firth combined to help knot the game at 1-1. That's how regulation would end, with Elmria out shooting Port Huron 41-24.

In the shootout, the Jackals scored in rounds two and three as Randy Murphy and Aaron Phillips tallied, while only Ian Jacobs marked for the Beacons. Emond stopped four of five Beacons faced in the OT, while Cooper stopped two of four Jackal shooters. With the win, Elmira moves past idle Adirondack for second place in the Eastern Conference with 50 points.

The Jackals return to action on Thursday at the Coach USA Center against Adirondack at 7 pm, then travel to Fort Wayne for back to back road games against the division leading Komets Friday and Saturday. All game action can be heard on your Home for Jackals Hockey, WiNGZ 104.9, with pre-game show starting a half hour before faceoff.
