Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Central Division leading Gary SouthShore RailCats dropped a 7-1 decision at the hands of the Sioux City Explorers on Tuesday night in Iowa with X's starter David Trahan twirling a complete game.

Sioux City put up six runs in the bottom of the second inning, all with two outs, sending 11 men to the plate to grab a 6-0 advantage. RailCat starter Nolan Nicholson retired the first two batters of the inning before walking Brett Flowers on a full count. Mike Murphy drove home the first run with a ground rule double into the right field corner. Murphy initially reached third and scored before the umpires conferred and ruled a ground rule double. Murphy would score moments later on a two-run single from Dustin Jones. Kent Sakamoto added a two-run single with the final run scoring on an error.

Trahan carried a no-hitter into the sixth for the Explorers before Kyle Haines led off with a single. The RailCats found a way to break up the shutout in the seventh. Mike Massaro led off with a double into the right field corner, his 22nd double of the year. The double extended Massaro's hitting streak to seven games. Mike Valadez drove home Massaro with an RBI groundout. The run halted a streak of 17.1 innings without a run. The X's immediately answered, logging three straight hits in the bottom of the inning to chase Nicholson and stretch the advantage to 7-1. Trahan struck out six and allowed just three hits in the victory, the first complete game against the RailCats this season.

The RailCats (47-34), who continue to lead the Central by three games over Wichita with 19 contests left in the year, tried a different look to the lineup but have dropped seven straight to Sioux City including five in a row at Lewis & Clark Park.

The series continues tomorrow night with a 7:05 p.m. affair. The RailCats will send LHP Carlos Rivas (5-0, 2.16) to the mound while Sioux City counters with RHP Ty Marotz (6-3, 4.84). The game can be heard live on The Lakeshore FM.
