Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
WINNIPEG, Manitoba. - Having won three of four extra-inning games in their last 10 contests, the Sioux Falls Pheasants' chances looked favorable when a 0-0 game went to extra frames on Tuesday night in Winnipeg. But the Winnipeg Goldeyes plated the only run of the night on Luis Alen's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning for a 1-0 defeat of the Pheasants.
The Goldeyes' shortstop Wes Long started the 11th inning with a single to center off Pheasants reliever Matt Lintzinger (0-1). Jon Weber followed with a walk, and both on advanced a balk. The Pheasants intentionally walked Fehlandt Lentini to load the bases and create force outs, but Alen sent the first pitch on a fly to center for the decisive run.
The pitching was led by starter Barry Fowler, who shut out the Goldeyes for seven innings on just four hits. Dan McDaniel worked out of a two-on, one-out jam for a scoreless eighth, and Ryan Fleckenstein pitched a scoreless ninth and 10th frames. Litzinger, signed on August 1, took his first loss of the year in his third appearance of the year.
Joe Anthonsen led off the 11th inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Gus Milner, but Reggie Abercrombie and Mark Shorey were unable to bring Anthonsen home.
The Pheasants bats were relatively quiet, with seven singles scattered among seven different hitters.
The Pheasants record fell to 38-43. They are nine games behind St. Paul in the wild card race with 19 games remaining.
Game three of the four-game series is at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8 in Winnipeg. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
