American Association Game Recaps

August 9, 2011 - American Association (AA) News Release

St. Paul 8, Wichita 7 (10 innings)

Saints 1B/C Richard Mercado went just 1-for-4 Tuesday. But it wasn't his hit that left the biggest impression on the Wingnuts. In the bottom of the 10th with men on second and third, Mercado sent a fly to left field deep enough to score 1B/LF Jason Cooper and win the game. It was Cooper's second run of the game and put an exclamation point on his 2-for-5 night. The Saints put seven different pitchers on the mound, but it was Caleb Thielbar - who threw just the final third of an inning - that picked up the win. Wichita used a five-run eighth to take its only lead of the game. But three St. Paul runs in the bottom of the inning tied the score and set the stage for the big finish.

Sioux City 7, Gary SouthShore 1

Sioux City starting pitcher David Trahan threw a complete game and allowed only one run on three hits with six strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. In support of Trahan, the Explorers put eight straight men on base with two outs in the second to score six runs. Runs No. 4 and 5 in the frame came on a Kent Sakamoto single. Sakamoto went 3-for-4 on the night. After the big second inning, the Explorers never were threatened. The RailCats' only run came when C Mike Valadez grounded out but allowed Mike Massaro to cross home plate.

Lincoln 6, Fargo-Moorhead 1

The Saltdogs scored five runs in the first two innings and never looked back against Fargo-Moorhead. Three of those first five scores came on one swing of 1B Phil Hawke's bat, when the Baton Rouge resident hit his 18th home run of the season. With run support from the get-go, Lincoln starting pitcher John James threw seven innings and allowed only one run on seven hits and two walks before reliever Garrett Sherrill took over and allowed one hit in the final two innings. RedHawks DH Jesse Hoorelbeke hit a sixth-inning home run to account for Lincoln's only run.

Grand Prairie 8, Kansas City 0

A three-run David Thomas home run highlighted a seven-run AirHogs second inning that propelled them to an 8-0 win. It was Thomas' only hit of the game. Also responsible for multiple runs, Grand Prairie RF Stephen Douglas went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI bringing his season batting average to .375. AirHogs starting pitcher Jason Jennings threw six scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out four. Kansas City leadoff CF Keanon Simon had two of his club's six hits in four at-bats.

El Paso 3, Amarillo 2 (10 innings)

The Sox tied the score with El Paso twice, but never took a lead in the Diablos' 3-2, extra-innings win. The winning 10th-inning run came on 2B/SS Albenis Machado's second hit of the night, when a single to right scored 3B Johan Garcia from second. Machado also scored El Paso's second run in the sixth frame. El Paso starting pitcher Scott Hodsdon worked around 11 hits to give up only two runs. But Hodsdon didn't factor in the decision, having exited with the score tied at two runs apiece. The win went to reliever Kyle Cremers, who threw the last inning and two-thirds and allowed one hit.

Shreveport-Bossier 11, Fort Worth 4

The Captains got two triples and a homer in the six-run fourth inning that sent Shreveport-Bossier to an 11-4 win. The homer - a Mike Provencher blast - went for two runs, plating Provencher and Jonathan Johnson from third. Johnson got there after hitting one of the two triples of the frame. Captains LF Chad Gabriel hit the other and went 3-for-5, falling a homer shy of the cycle. Offensively for Fort Worth, RF Marcos Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Winnipeg 1, Sioux Falls 0 (11 innings)

Only one Winnipeg batsman failed to safely reach base in the 11th inning; however, that Goldeyes batter - C Luis Alen - batted in the winning run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Alen went 1-for-4 on the night. Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision, with Winnipeg's Zach Baldwin and Sioux Falls' Barry Fowler leaving after the fifth and seven innings, respectively. Baldwin allowed five hits and struck out two before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Fowler gave up four hits with two K's.
