Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

WINNIPEG, Manitoba. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants' bid for a sixth consecutive win came up short on a rainy and chilly Monday night in Winnipeg.

Behind 14 hits, the Winnipeg Goldeyes snatched game one of a four-game series with a 6-2 victory. The Pheasants had won their previous four contests with the North Division's leaders.

Winnipeg never trailed after Kody Kaiser's two-out, two-run single in the third gave them a 2-0 lead. They added two more runs in the fourth inning. Jon Weber's base hit knocked in a run, and Louis Ott's single was mishandled in right field, allowing Weber to score from first.

The Pheasants got on the board in the fifth on Kevin Carby's sacrifice fly. A double play groundout in the sixth from Mark Shorey brought Gus Milner home to cut the Goldeyes' advantage to 4-2.

Winnipeg cushioned the lead again with an RBI double in the seventh from Wes Long and Ridge Carpenter's single in the eighth.

The Pheasants pitching struggled to close out innings. The Goldeyes scored four of their six runs with two outs in an inning.

Pheasants starter Kyle Ruwe (4-4) lasted 5 1/3 innings. He yielded four runs and nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Winnipeg starter Chris Salamida (9-3) beat the Pheasants for the first time in four tries. Through 6 1/3 innings, he allowed seven hits and two runs, one earned. He struck out six.

The Pheasants record fell to 38-42. They are eight games behind St. Paul in the wild card race with 20 games remaining.

The Sioux Falls Pheasants move on to face the first-place Winnipeg Goldeyes for a four-game series. The opener is set for 7:05 p.m. on Monday, August 8 in Winnipeg. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
