INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Missouri Comets (11-2) kicked off 2016 with a hard fought 5-4 win over Central Division opponent Milwaukee Wave (6-5) to tie the series at one in front of 3,462 fans at the SEC Arena despite a late come-from-behind effort by Coach Giuliano Oliviero's team, which tallied three goals in the fourth quarter.
With a brace, midfielder Milan Ivanovic was named Borden Man of the Match, while goalkeeper Boris Pardo recorded his league-leading tenth win of the campaign recording a total of 10 saves.
Defender Alain Matingou made his 2015/16 debut after missing the first half of the season due to injury. In addition, forward Max Touloute scored a goal in his return after six weeks out.
Coach Vlatko Andonovski's team came out to the field with a strong and offensive mindset, which paid off with three unanswered goals throughout the first quarter scored by Ivanovic, team captain Vahid Assadpour and MVP Leo Gibson.
Seven minutes into the second quarter, Ivanovic completed his brace before the visiting Wave got on the board with the first of two penalty kick conversions by midfielder Max Ferdinand to end the half 4-1 in favor of Missouri.
The second half saw a better Milwaukee Wave return to the field. Nevertheless, Touloute extended the lead for the home side when he fired a rocket from a distance to the top right corner ending the third stanza 5-1.
Throughout the fourth and final period, the Comets were unable to score, while the Wave beat Pardo three times, two of them with a sixth attacker late in the quarter but their efforts came short as the time ran out for a 5-4 final score.
Next up, the Comets host the Chicago Mustangs (9-2) a week from tonight. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for a possible rescheduling due to NFL playoffs conflict. As for now, that game remains at 7:35 p.m. CT.
