
Columbus Wins Tough Contest against Mississippi Surge, 5-3

The Columbus Cottonmouths and Mississippi Surge were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Columbus made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.
Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Sam Bowles secured the win for the Cottonmouths with a goal in the third period.
Columbus got the win thanks to a great game by Bowles, who had two goals and one assist. Bowles scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 11:36 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Columbus. The Cottonmouths had gotten the advantage when Mississippi Surge's Mike Lysyj was sent off for too many men. Jason Gray picked up the assist. Bowles' next tally on the power play made the score 5-3 Columbus with 4:14 left in the third period. Jordan Draper assisted on the tally.
With 43 shots on target during the contest, Columbus exceeded the 26.6 shots it averages per game this year.
Columbus additionally got points from Neilsson Arcibal, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Draper, who also racked up one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Columbus also got a goal from Preston Shupe as well. In addition, Columbus received assists from Levi Lind, who had two and Andy Willigar, Matt Gingera, and Seth Ronsberg, who each chipped in one.
Mississippi Surge racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with five minors and two majors for 20 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi Surge surpassed its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. The 23 shots that Mississippi Surge put on net surpassed Mississippi Surge's average of 19.2 shots per game this season.
Mississippi Surge was led by Lucas LaBelle, who tallied two goals. LaBelle scored the first of his two goals at 16:17 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Mississippi Surge. Jeff Martens picked up the assist. LaBelle's next tally made the score 3-3 with 11:07 left in the third period. Tom Craig assisted on the tally. Joe Tolles also scored for Mississippi Surge. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi Surge were Evan Zych and Kyle Kudroch, who contributed one a piece.
The Cottonmouths' Andrew Loewen stopped 20 shots out of the 23 that he faced. Columbus totaled 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors and two majors and went 3-for-6 on the power play. Dan Clarke rejected 38 shots on goal for Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge registered one goal on three power play opportunities.
