Mississippi Surge News Release

Biloxi, MS - It was the Matt Gingera show in Columbus, Georgia, as the Left Winger scored 5 goals, his fifth being the game winner in overtime.

In a high paced start to the second period, Matt Gingera opened his show scoring two goals within 63 seconds of each other on Mathieu Dugas and the Surge defense. Hats off Gingera, who nailed a hat track less than halfway through the game. Columbus dominated the period until Mark Thorburn scored his eight goal of the season, closing the columbus lead to just one goal.

Just as the action picked up from the first to the second, the third period did everything but disappoint. Jordan Peddle scored 41 seconds into the period on an assist by Tom Craig. Matt Gingera responded for the Cottonmouths scoring his fourth goal of the night. With a 5-4 lead, Mark Thorburn tied the game for Mississippi with his second goal of the night, this one coming on a power play. In overtime, Surge goal tender Mathieu Dugas, made brilliant save after brilliant save until Matt Gingera finally shot one past him to end the Matt Gingera show in Columbus.

Columbus outshot Mississippi 44 to 29, winning their second in a row against the Surge. Both Columbus and Mississippi scored twice on power play opportunities, the Surge going 2-5 and the Cottonmouths 2-4. Despite having won 6 of their last 8 games with Mathieu Dugas between the pipes coming into Columbus, the Surge won't walk away empty handed. The team battled hard overcoming an early two goal deficit, eventually forcing the game into overtime.

The Surge will finish their three game weekend tomorrow night at the Power Plant against the Pensacola IceFlyers.
