Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears were back at home tonight after earning 5 of 6 possible points in a three game stretch in Bloomington. The Ice Bears faced the Fayetteville FireAntz in the Civic Coliseum in front of a musical crowd of 4,229 fans. It was the first time the teams have played since former Ice Bear, Emery Olauson, became the FireAntz's head coach. The Ice Bears walked away with the win in overtime, 3-2 on Berkley Scott's shoot out winner.
Both teams saw one power play opportunity in the first period. The game remained scoreless for the majority of play. With 2:14 left, Francis Drolet notched his twentieth season goal and put the Ice Bears at a 1-0 lead going into first intermission. The assists were credited to Berkley Scott and Mark Van Vliet. The Ice Bears lead the FireAntz in shots on goal 15 to 5.
The Ice Bears widened the gap early in the second. Captain David Segal deflected a pass past Fayetteville goaltender Peter Skoggard 42 seconds after the second period puck drop. Ben Souders and Eric Satim assisted the goal, and the Ice Bears took a 2-0 lead.
The rest of the second period was a series of penalties and power plays, but neither team was able to capitalize on the advantages. At the 18:54 mark, Skoggard was penalized 2 minutes for delay of game. So the Ice Bears began the final period on the power play.
Fayetteville scored their first goal of the night 5:48 into the third. Then with 3:36 remaining in regulation play, Fayetteville tied up the game. The third period ended with the teams locked at 2, and the game moved into a 5 minute, 3-on-3 overtime.
Teams traded chances in extra time but both net minders stood pat and the teams proceeded to a shootout. Fayetteville's John Clewlow was first to find the net in the third round. Van Vliet came behind him and answered with a goal, keeping the game tied. Then in the fifth round, Fayetteville's shooter missed. Scott stepped up and notched the game winning goal to end with the night with a 3-2 Ice Bears victory.
The Ice Bears will be back on the ice tomorrow night to play the Bloomington Thunder for the first time in Knoxville. Saturday is "Get Your Geek On" night at the Ice Bears game. The game supports Knoxville's library system. Get your tickets now, puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
