Columbus Destroyers (5-6)

Television: None.
Series Record: The Destroyers have faced the New York Dragons franchise more so than any other team. In their seven-plus seasons of play in the Arena Football League, the Destroyers have faced the Dragons 13 times and are 5-8 against them.
Series Streaks: The teams have met once already this season with the Destroyers rallying from a 31-17 halftime deficit to defeat the Dragons 65-54.
Coaches: Columbus, Doug Kay, first season in Columbus, fourth overall (5-6, 21-35 overall).
New York, Weyland Harding, second season (6-5, 16-11 overall).

OVERVIEW: The Columbus Destroyers and New York Dragons both are desperately in need of a win heading into tonight's game. As they sit right now, neither team would be in the playoffs, if the playoffs started today.

At 6-5, the Dragons would be out as they lose the tiebreakers to Philadelphia (6-5) and Tampa Bay (6-5). The Destroyers remain a game behind all three teams and currently hold tiebreakers over New York and Philadelphia.

A win for the Destroyers would give them a tiebreaking edge over the Dragons since Columbus has beaten New York once already this season.

If this game is anything like the first, it will be a knock down, drag out battle as the Destroyers overcame a 31-17 halftime deficit to score 48 second half points and claim a 65-54 victory at Nassau Coliseum. Since the loss, the Dragons have won three of their last five.

A COLUMBUS WIN OVER NEW YORK WOULD...

- Give the Destroyers a 6-6 record on the season
- Tie the franchise record (6) for wins in a season
- Sweep the season series against New York for the first time in history
- Give the Destroyers a 6-8 record against the Dragons
- Give the Destroyers their fourth home victory of the season, which would tie a franchise record

DESTROYERS Last Week
Orlando Predators 39
Columbus Destroyers 36
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Destroyers' defense forced two fumbles and outscored the Predators 21-6 in the second half in a valiant effort, but fell 39-36 to the Orlando Predators in front of 11,551 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena on Sunday.

Columbus wide receiver/defensive back B.J. Barre was named Defensive Player of the Game after he recorded 11.0 tackles (9UT-4AT), forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and added two pass breakups.

Orlando wide receiver/linebacker Javarus Dudley was named Offensive Player of the Game for his eight receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Dudley's teammate, wide receiver/linebacker Jerrian James earned Ironman of the Game honors after he hauled in five passes for 53 yards and a score and added 6.5 tackles and one fumble recovery on defense.

The Destroyers and Predators opened the game exchanging touchdowns. Saunders tied the game at 7-7 with a 30-yard touchdown reception from quarterback John Kaleo. The touchdown brings Saunders' streak to seven consecutive games with a touchdown reception. Columbus' defense, not to be out done by the offense, proceeded to force a defensive stop by tackling James on the 1-yard line.

Kaleo, spreading the wealth, found wide receiver/linebacker Thabiti Davis in the back of the endzone for a 14-yard touchdown pass with 1 minute to go in the half. After a failed onside kick, Orlando quarterback Joe Hamilton rushed in from 13 yards out to end the half with the Predators leading 33-14.

After some key halftime adjustments, the Destroyers opened the second half by forcing an Orlando fumble, which offensive/defensive lineman Mike Sutton would recover on the Predator's 15-yard line. Kaleo and Davis would turn the fumble into a seven-point swing for the Destroyers.

The Destroyers began the fourth quarter in the same fashion as the third, by forcing an Orlando fumble. Saunders would then earn his second touchdown reception of the evening after Kaleo's pass bounced off the defender and then the sidewall, before falling into Saunders' hands.

Kaleo would once again find Saunders in the back of the endzone, this time for the two-point conversion. After Saunders third touchdown of the night, the game would end in a 39-36 defeat.
THIS WEEK's OPPONENT
The New York Dragons have been a part of the Arena Football League since the 2001 season after starting out as the Iowa Barnstormers in 1995.

The Barnstormers/Dragons have been a successful franchise throughout history as the team competed for a pair of ArenaBowl titles in 1996 and 1997. In the franchise's 11-plus seasons, the team has compiled a record of 106-78.

The Dragons are under the guidance of second year head coach Weyland Harding. Harding is a familiar name to the Destroyers franchise as he was a coach for the team in both Buffalo and Columbus in 2000, 2002 and 2003.

Since the franchise moved to New York, the Dragons have held a 6-5 mark against the Destroyers with a 2-3 record at Nationwide Arena.

LAST MEETING WITH NEW YORK

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Columbus Destroyers offensive specialist Carl Bond caught nine passes for 190 yards and three scores to take home Offensive Player of the Game honors as he helped Columbus beat New York 65-54 in front of 10,173 fans at Nassau Coliseum.

The Destroyers defense stepped up big again, forcing five turnovers to help the team overcome an early 14-3 deficit to win for the second consecutive week and earn their first road and Eastern Division win of the season.

With the score tied at 45-45, Destroyers defensive specialist Jerald Brown picked off a Juston Wood pass at the Destroyers 16-yard line. It marked the third straight game that Brown has intercepted a pass and was his fifth of the season.

Three plays later, John Kaleo scooted in from 1-yard out to give the Destroyers their first lead of the game. The extra point was blocked and returned by Dragons' wide receiver/defensive back DeShane Dennis to put the score at 51-47 in favor of the Destroyers. Dragons quarterback Juston Wood gave the Dragons a 54-51 lead after a 2-yard touchdown run with 3:11 remaining. But the lead was short lived as the Destroyers scored on the ensuing play when Kaleo found Bond from 30-yards out to regain the lead at 58-54.

Defensive Player of the Game B.J. Barre snagged his second interception of the game to set up a fullback/linebacker Harold Wells 3-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 65-54. Brandon Hefflin sealed the victory with the Destroyers fourth interception of the night on the Dragons ensuing possession.

DROP BACK
The Columbus Destroyers held the Orlando Predators to six second half points, but were unable to overcome a 33-14 halftime deficit and fell 39-36 in front of 11,551 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena Sunday. The Destroyers (5-6) scored with 2.5 seconds remaining in the game to cut the Predators (7-4) lead to three, but were unsuccessful in recovering an onside kick. Wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders had a game-high eight receptions for 90 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. Wide receiver/defensive back B.J. Barre took home Defensive Player of the Game honors after he recorded a game-high 11 tackles (9UT-4AT), broke up two passes, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.

FORWARD MOTION
The Destroyers hit the road for the first of back-to-back road tests when they travel to take on Eastern Division rival Philadelphia. The Destroyers and Soul met once this season, on Mar. 18, and Columbus held Philadelphia to its fewest points scored in team history in a 53-20 victory. Defensive specialist Jerald Brown intercepted two passes and returned one for a score to lead the defense. Quarterback John Kaleo completed 25-of-35 passes for 295 yards and five touchdowns. Wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders caught seven passes for 100 yards and two scores. The Destroyers and Soul have met five times in history with Philadelphia holding a 3-2 edge.

HEAD COACHES
DOUG KAY: The Destroyers hired Doug Kay as head coach on July 14, 2005. Kay is in his first season in Columbus and brings 12 years of Arena Football coaching experience. In 10 of his 12 seasons, Kay's teams have qualified for the playoffs, including two ArenaBowl championships. Kay also has coached the Charlotte Rage (1995) and the Carolina Cobras (2000-01). Through nine games of the 2006 season, Kay has guided the Destroyers to a 5-6.
WEYLAND HARDING: In his second season as the head coach of the Dragons, Harding is no stranger to the Destroyers franchise. Harding began his coaching career with the Destroyers in 2000 as the defensive backs coach. He returned to the Destroyers in 2002 as the defensive coordinator where he continued that role through the 2004 season.

SEVENTH HEAVEN
When it comes to consistency, Destroyers wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders knows a thing or two about the subject. In his past seven games, Saunders has caught at least one touchdown pass. In this past Sunday's loss to the Orlando Predators, Saunders led the Destroyers and the game in receiving with eight catches for 90 yards and three scores. He also had a two-point conversion reception on the afternoon. It was the fourth time that he has hauled in at least two touchdown receptions. In the past two weeks, Saunders has jumped to the top of the Destroyers receiving chart, leading the team in receptions and receiving touchdowns. For the year, Saunders has 48 receptions for 546 yards and 12 touchdowns.

DEFENSE STILL STANDS STRONG
Adversity. The Destroyers defense looked that word in the eye this past Sunday against Orlando and laughed. After losing both defensive specialists in the first half of Sunday's game, the Destroyers defense went on to hold the Predators to six second half points, and for the fifth time this season, held an opponent under 40 points. The defense ranks first in points allowed, giving up an average 41.7 points per game, ahead of Dallas, who is allowing 44.6 points per game. The Destroyers rank in the top five of every other defensive statistical category. Leading the defense is second-year Destroyers' defensive specialist Brandon Hefflin, who has recorded 50.5 tackles (41UT-19AT), two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, six pass breakups and an assisted tackle for a loss.

ROOKIE IRONMAN
Destroyers rookie wide receiver/defensive back B.J. Barre defies the word Ironman. Barre does everything he can for the Destroyers, except pass and kick. This past weekend against the Predators, Barre led the game defensively with 11 tackles (9UT-4AT), a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two pass breakups. Offensively he returned five kickoffs for 119 yards and had a long return of 43 yards. He also had a 25-yard pass reception. Barre took home Defensive Player of the Game honors for his performance defensively. Earlier this season, Barre was named Ironman of the Game against New York. Barre has had a balanced season to this point. He has caught 21 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns and returned 23 kickoffs for 459 yards. On the other side of the ball, he has recorded 37.0 tackles (31UT-12AT), forced and recovered two fumbles, intercepted two passes, broke up three more and has a tackle for a loss to his credit.
THE PLAYOFF RACE HAS STARTED
With five games remaining in the 2006 season, each and every game becomes more and more important, especially in the National Conference. Three of the nine teams have identical 7-4 records and three others are tied with records of 6-5. The two division winners receive a first-round bye with the third seed hosting the sixth seed and the fourth seed hosting the fifth seed in the Wild Card Round. If the playoffs were to start today, the Destroyers would miss the playoffs by one game. Below is the National Conference playoff picture through Week 11. The "x" indicates the divisional leaders.

JUST ONE MORE WIN
The Destroyers are knocking on a franchise record's door. With five games left in the season, the Destroyers only are one win away from tying a franchise record for wins in a season. At 5-6, the Destroyers need one more win to tie and two wins to break the franchise record of six wins set by the 2001 and 2002 Buffalo Destroyers and 2004 Columbus Destroyers. The Destroyers are off to their best start since the 2002 season when the Buffalo Destroyers started the season 6-5. Should the Destroyers win on Friday, it would be the fourth home victory of the season, which would tie the franchise record for home victories in a season.

CLOSE, BUT NOT CLOSE ENOUGH
In the game of Arena Football, a lot of times, games are decided by a narrow margin. Until this past weekend that had not been the case with the Columbus Destroyers this season. Through their first 10 games, the Destroyers had not had a game decided by 10 points or fewer. What made that stat even stranger is that every other team in the League has played in at least three games decided by 10 points or fewer. This past weekend's game against Orlando had the Predators leading 39-29 with less than a minute to go, but Destroyers quarterback John Kaleo connected with wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders with 2.5 seconds remaining to cut the lead to three. An onside kick attempt failed and the Predators ran out the clock to seal the win.
KICKER GETS HIS KICKS
Even with a nagging injury to his kicking foot, kicker Mark Lewis has continued to be consistent lately. This past weekend against Orlando, Lewis drilled all four of his extra point attempts. Lewis has now made 20 consecutive extra points. Lewis had made six straight field goals heading into Sunday's game, but he just missed a field goal as time expired in the first half, as the ball hit off the inside of the right upright and out. On the season, Lewis has made 38-of-41 extra points and 12-of-20 field goals. He is tied for second in field goals made and is second in the League in extra point kicking percentage at 92.7 percent.

GIVE US THE DARN BALL
The talk around Destroyers camp is defense, as it should be, as the team has shut down opposing offenses as of late. The reason for their success might have to deal with the fact that the team is forcing turnovers at an alarming rate. The Destroyers have forced a League-best 32 turnovers on the season. Of the turnovers, 15 have come by way of interceptions, while adding 17 fumble recoveries. The Destroyers are tied for the League lead in fumbles recovered and are fourth in interceptions. On the flip side, the Destroyers have turned the ball over 23 times, giving them a plus-9 mark in the turnover margin category. That ranks them second in the AFL with Dallas, who has forced 31 turnovers and turned the ball over 21 times on the season.

OFF THE WALL
One of the better rules in Arena Football is that the side walls are live. A player can catch a pass, bounce off the wall and as long as he wasn't touched by a defender, he can continue on down the field. The same holds true if a pass were to bounce off the wall and not hit the ground, the ball would be live. The latter played true this past weekend. With the Destroyers trailing 36-21 in the fourth quarter, quarterback John Kaleo lobbed a pass to wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders in the right corner of the end zone. The pass sailed a little long, was tipped by Orlando defensive specialist Khalil Carter, who tumbled to the turf. Saunders, being alert, batted at the ball, which landed on Carter's shoulder, and then snagged it off his shoulder for the score. The play was initially ruled incomplete, but the ruling was overturned.

FAMILIAR FACES
With former Destroyers defensive coordinator Weyland Harding now in his second season as the head coach of the New York Dragons, a few familiar faces will be on the sidelines for this weekend's game. On the bench, the entire coaching staff consists of former Destroyers coaches. Offensive coordinator Tony Kimbrough held the same role in 2000 and 2001 with the Destroyers. Line coach/special teams coordinator Jerome Brown was with the Destroyers in 2003 as the offensive/defensive line coach and wide receiver/linebacker coach/special teams coordinator Chad Lindsey held the same role in 2003.
