LAST WEEK:
BLAZE LOSE TO RATTLERS, 64-52
Fourth Consecutive Loss Puts Blaze in Playoff Jeopardy.
SALT LAKE CITY - Facing the team he coached for 13 seasons, DANNY WHITE and the Utah Blaze (3-8) were unable to close out a 52-52 tie with five minutes to go that resulted in another home loss to the Arizona Rattlers, 64-52, at the Delta Center Friday in front of 14,651 fans. The Blaze are now three games out of the division lead with only five games remaining.
"This is a game tonight that we all thought we should have had," White said. "I felt like defensively tonight there was a huge improvement in our pass rush. That was great to see, but frankly our offense let us down."
Utah QB JASON GESSER, who is still searching for his first win as the starter, finished the game completing 15-of-24 passes for 160 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.
"It's plain and simple. I didn't come through in the clutch for my team," GESSER said. "I rushed a couple of throws and didn't come through when my team needed me. That's the bottom line."
OS SIAHA BURLEY extended his touchdown streak in all 11 games for the Blaze this season, finished with four catches for 41 yards and one touchdown while piling up a total of 138 all-purpose yards. WR/DB TOM PACE recorded a team-high six catches for 74 yards and two touchdown receptions, plus his first rushing touchdown of the season.
Arizona WR/DB RANDY GATEWOOD was named Offensive Player of the Game as he tied an AFL record with seven touchdown receptions in a single game along with 13 total catches for 149 yards. DS CLARENCE LAWSON was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game after recording an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery with four assisted tackles. WR/LB WILSON THOMAS was named Ironman of the Game with two receptions for 47 yards including a critical third down conversion and one special teams touchdown on a kickoff recovery.
LAST MEETING IN LOS ANGELES ON FEBRUARY 25:
BLAZE BURN AVENGERS ON LATE TD, 68-66
Germaine, Bryant Connection Lifts Blaze As Time Expires
LOS ANGELES - Utah Blaze QB JOE GERMAINE found WR/DB ORSHAWANTE BRYANT for a 12-yard touchdown as time expired to give the Blaze a 68-66 Western Division victory over the Los Angeles Avengers (1-4) at STAPLES Center in front of 12,314 fans.
The victory improved Utah head coach/general manager DANNY WHITE'S all-time record in Los Angeles to 10-0.
GERMAINE finished the night completing 31-of-40 passes for 387 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception, as well as adding a rushing touchdown. OS SIAHA BURLEY led the Blaze receivers with 13 receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns.
BRYANT, who put in an Ironman performance, finished with seven receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns on offense and 4.5 total tackles and a pass breakup on defense.
Los Angeles QB SONNY CUMBIE completed 29-of-43 passes for 266 yards and seven touchdowns. WR/LB GREG HOPKINS had seven catches for 93 yards and three touchdowns and also recovered a fumble for a score. TONY LOCKE and KEVIN INGRAM had two scores each.
"We took it to another level tonight," White said. "We were able to execute in the final minute and got over the hump in a close game."
Reigning Lineman of the Year SILAS DEMARY got the scoring started by sacking and forcing Germaine to fumble and allowing former Ironman of the Year, WR/LB HOPKINS to scoop up the loose ball for a 6-yard touchdown return and an Avengers' 7-0 lead.
GERMAINE then got the Blaze on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run to knot the score at 7-7. The Blaze ended the first quarter with a 21-14 lead after WR/LB JUSTIN SKAGGS scored on a 5-yard run.
The Blaze and Avengers each posted 14 points in the second quarter, but Los Angeles outscored Utah 14-7 in the third quarter. But, the Avengers were unable to capitalize as they twice let 10-point leads slip away in the fourth quarter.
After Hopkins scored with 15 seconds remaining to give the Avengers a 66-62 lead, Germaine completed three passes - two to Bryant and one to Burley - for 35 yards and the game-winning touchdown pass as the clock hit zeros.
Los Angeles swept the Player of the Game honors despite the loss. Cumbie was named Offensive Player of the Game, while RICKY SHARPE got Defensive honors and Hopkins took home Ironman of the Game recognition.

THE COACHES:
Utah - Danny White, 14th season
124-63 (.663) reg. season; 144-73 (.663) overall
10-3 career vs. Los Angeles
White is currently in his 14th season as an AFL head coach and first with the Blaze. White has compiled a record of 144-73 and advanced to the AFL Playoffs in 12 of the previous 13 years (hasn't missed the postseason since 1992). Prior to joining the Blaze, White was the head coach of the Arizona Rattlers for 13 seasons (1992-2004). The AFL Hall of Fame coach has two titles (1994 and 1997) to his credit and has made five ArenaBowl appearances (1994, 97, 2002-04). During his last season in Arizona in 2004, White compiled a 13-6 record and made his third straight ArenaBowl appearance. White, won AFL "Coach of the Year" award in 1993. White officially became the head coach of the Blaze on April 21, 2005. He played quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys (1976-88) and helped lead the Cowboys to the postseason five times and won three NFC East titles during his tenure as starting QB. In his first year as a starter (1980), White set the club single-season record for touchdown passes (28) and then broke the record (29) in 1983. Those records still stand as the top two single-season marks in franchise history. He still owns eight Cowboy records and is the member of FOUR Halls of Fame (Arizona Sports, Arizona State, College Football and Arena Football).
Los Angeles - Ed Hodgkiss, 5th season
41-32 (.562) reg. season; 41-36 (.532) overall
0-1 career vs. Utah
One of the brightest offensive masterminds in the AFL, Ed Hodgkiss is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Avengers. In his four previous seasons, he compiled a record of 38-24 and advanced to the AFL Playoffs each year. In his first two seasons at the helm, he directed the Avengers to a 19-11 record. No head coach in league history has won more games in his first two seasons than Hodgkiss. Last season, the Avengers captured their first Western Division championship and compiled a 10-6 record. He finished second in the balloting for AFL "Coach of the Year" honors. In 2004, the Avengers went 9-7 and led the AFL in scoring, averaging 56.5 points per game. In 2003, the Avengers won a franchise-best 11 games and earned a first-round playoff bye. Hodgkiss, who was the runner-up for the 2003 AFL "Coach of the Year" award, oversaw the league's most efficient offense, which scored 122 touchdowns (most in the AFL) on only 619 total plays (least in the AFL). Hodgkiss became the head coach of the Avengers on Oct. 5, 2001. In his first season as a head coach at any level, the Avenger offense scored an average of 52.2 points per game. Prior to joining the Avengers, Hodgkiss was the Indiana Firebirds' offensive coordinator for three seasons (1999-2001) and was part of an ArenaBowl championship in 1999.

HOME HEATS UP: The Utah Blaze currently are No. 3 in the Arena Football League in average attendance (15,248) and have drawn 91,488 fans in just six games. The Philadelphia Soul (15,714 average) and Kansas City (15,558) are the two teams ahead of the Blaze. The Blaze have recorded two sellouts (Dallas on Feb. 4 and San Jose on March 4.)
ARENA QB RATING: The debate has gone on for years in the AFL... Does the outdoor QB Rating really translate to the indoor game? In a game where possessions and completion percentage dictates whether you win or lose, we decided to come up with a different formula that puts more weight on "TD-INT ratio" and completion percentage and no emphasis on yardage. Here's how it works:
TD% = TDs divided by TDs + INT
ARENA QB FORMULA: Multiply the TD% by 2 and add the completion % and divide it all by 3.
Since the AFL is a different game, below is the current ranking of the top 10 QBs based on the rating system for AFL QBs:
QUARTERBACK COM% TDs INT TD % ARENA RATING*
