Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS - Columbus Crew SC today announced that midfielder Wil Trapp and forward Gyasi Zardes have received international call-ups from the United States Men's National Team ahead of a pair of international friendlies in September against Mexico and Uruguay.
The United States is slated to face Mexico in a friendly contest on Friday, September 6 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The contest will mark the 70th time the two Concacaf sides have faced each other. The Stars and Stripes are then set to face Uruguay on Tuesday, September 10 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. The friendly against Uruguay will be the Americans' final match before the start of the Concacaf Nations League, a tournament that will help determine qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Crew SC captain Wil Trapp has earned 19 caps for the U.S. Men's National Team. He earned his first cap for the Stars and Stripes on January 28, 2015 in a friendly at Chile, entering as a second-half substitute. Trapp most recently started for the U.S. in a 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup Group stage match against Jamaica (June 26). In 2019, Trapp has made 23 regular-season appearances (all starts) for the Black & Gold and has provided four assists.
Forward Gyasi Zardes has earned 51 caps with the U.S. Men's National Team, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists. Zardes made his debut for the U.S. in a friendly against Chile on January 28, 2015, and he scored his first goal for the Stars and Stripes on June 5, 2015 against the Netherlands. The forward most recently featured for the U.S. earlier this year in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup Final against Mexico (July 7). In 2019, Zardes has made 23 regular-season appearances (all starts) for Crew SC while scoring 11 goals and providing two assists.
Crew SC's current roster features nine players that have received a senior National Team call-up in the last 12 months: Harrison Afful, Luis Diaz, Waylon Francis, David Guzman, Jonathan Mensah, Eloy Room, Wil Trapp, Romario Williams and Gyasi Zardes.
