FIREFLIES FALL SHORT 7-3 SUNDAY: The Fireflies fell short in their finale with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, losing 7-4 at Segra Park Sunday evening. The difference came in the top of the sixth inning, when the Pelicans were able to score a trio of runs to edge ahead 5-2. Three straight Pelicans (8-7) were able to have RBI hits off Ryan Hennen (L, 2-2). It started with a Matt Warkentin single, then a Malcom Quintero double and finally a Jacob Wetzel sacrifice fly gave Myrtle Beach a three-run lead. Warkentin was able to come through again in the seventh with a two-run double that plated Kevin Made and Ezequiel Pagan to push Myrtle Beach in front 7-2.

MOVING ON UP: Following the off day, catcher Felix Familia and RHP Delvin Capellan were promoted to Quad Cities. It will be Familia's second stint with the River Bandits this season and Capellan earned his first call-up to High-A after going 1-0 with a 0.93 ERA across six outings in the month of June. It was the second month this season where Capellan held an ERA of 1.00 or lower. To fill the void in the roster from those two players, reliever John McMillon and outfielder Jaswel De Los Santos have rejoined the Fireflies. De Los Santos has rebounded in a big way since being delegated to the Arizona Complex League. In 20 games in Columbia this year, the outfielder was hitting .082. In 16 games in the Complex League since he left Columbia, he owns a .292/.356/.492 slash smashing three doubles, two triples and two homers in his brief stint out West.

ROAD WARRIORS: The Fireflies have been rolling on the road since the start of the second half. After taking two of three against the RiverDogs to open up the first half, they swept the Augusta GreenJackets away from home, moving their road record to 8-1 in the second half.

MAKING MY WAY DOWN TOWN: Fireflies outfielder River Town is on a roll. As he walked in the first inning of Saturday's game, Town reached base safely in his 25th-consecutive game, which is the longest active streak in Class-A baseball. He is tied for the seventh-longest active streak in Minor League Baseball. Colson Montgomery has reached safely in 45 games dating back to April 24. The longest on-base streak in A-ball this season belonged to Denzel Clarke of the Stockton Ports. The outfielder reached safely in 37 games from April 14-June 11. The longest franchise on-base streak belongs to Jeremy Vasquez who reached safely in 28-consecutive games from April 5-May 6, 2018.

NEW YEAR, NEW ME: The second half of the season started last Thursday, which reset each team's record to 0-0. The Fireflies finished the first half (66 games) 28 games back of Myrtle Beach, who had the best record in Minor League Baseball. After starting the second-half 11-4, the Fireflies are in first place and possess a magic number of 51 to clinch the first playoff berth in franchise history.

AMAZING AVILA: Righty Luinder Avila is the only qualifying pitcher for the Columbia Fireflies this season. Last week, after working six innings without allowing an earned run and punching out nine GreenJackets hitters, he earned Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors. He continued his hot stretch yesterday, spinning five frames and allowing a single earned run. It was enough to earn his fifth win of the season as the Fireflies beat Myrtle Beach 5-3. In Avila's last three starts, dating back to June 25, he has tallied 17 innings while only allowing two earned runs (1.06 ERA). During the run, he has punched out 15 hitters while walking only a pair.
