Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

ZEBULON, N.C. - After falling behind 2-1 after three innings, the Delmarva Shorebirds bats awoke down the stretch to help secure a 7-3 win on Tuesday night over the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium.

The win is the fourth in a row for the Shorebirds (27-54, 6-10) while the Mudcats (40-42, 6-10) suffered their sixth consecutive loss.

The Shorebirds started the scoring in the second. Roberto Martinez reached on an error with one away and one out later, Luis Valdez doubled him home to make it 1-0.

Conor Grady retired the first seven Mudcats batters he saw, but saw that streak snapped when Jesus Chirinos hit a solo homer in the third, his fourth of the season, tying the game at 1-1.

Carolina took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Eduardo Garcia produced a two-out RBI single, but saw their momentum stifled when Garcia was thrown out at the plate to end the frame, trying to score from first on a Hedbert Perez double.

The Shorebirds rode the momentum of the put at the plate into the fifth. Elio Prado took the first pitch of the frame deep to right for his first homer of the season, tying the game at 2-2. Frederick Bencosme then walked and went first to third on an Isaac De León single. A wild pitch advanced both runners, scoring Bencosme, before Trendon Craig rocketed a double to score De León and make it 4-2 Delmarva.

In the sixth, Valdez singled and then swiped second, his league-leading 42 stolen base, before scoring on a Prado double to extend the 'Birds lead to 5-2.

Carolina got a run back in the bottom of the sixth after Jeferson Quero doubled and then took third on a wild pitch, with the resulting throwing error allowing him to score.

The Shorebirds got that run right back in the seventh as Noelberth Romero doubled with two away and then scored on a Stiven Acevedo triple.

Frederick Bencosme put the cherry on top of the win for the Shorebirds with a solo homer leading off the ninth, his first of the season, bringing the game to its final line of 7-3.

Conor Grady (4-6) posted his second quality start of the year for the Shorebirds, tossing six innings while allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks, striking out five.

Miguel Segura (2-2) suffered the loss for Carolina, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks.

Dylan Heid earned his first save for Delmarva with three shutout innings to close out the game, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out five.

The Shorebirds continue their six-game series with the Carolina Mudcats on Wednesday, July 13 at Five County Stadium. The Shorebirds hand the ball to Deivy Cruz (0-0, 2.19) while the Mudcats counter with Stiven Cruz (3-3, 4.28). First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 10:45 a.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
