July 12, 2022 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

After being tied 2-2 for a majority of the game, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans sacrificed three runs in the top of the eighth as the Fayetteville Woodpeckers rallied for a 5-2 win on Tuesday night. It was the third series-opening loss for the Pelicans in a row as they fell to 55-27 on the year and 8-8 in the second half. The Woodpeckers improved to 36-44 with the win and 5-10 in the second half.

Two home runs from Kevin Made (1-4, HR, RBI) and Juan Mora (1-4, HR, RBI) powered the Pelicans in the first two innings. Myrtle Beach stranded five runners and went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.

Despite a great night from Tyler Schlaffer, Angel Gonzalez (1-1) took the loss after allowing two earned runs in his 1 1/3 frames off a home run and a walk. Schlaffer tossed the opening six innings with two earned runs off three hits and a walk while tying his career high at eight strikeouts.

Fayetteville homered three times from Joey Loperfido (2-4, HR, 2B, RBI), Rainier Rivas (1-4, HR, RBI), and Logan Cerny (2-4, HR, 3 RBI). Cerny and Loperfido accounted for four of the five Woodpecker hits.

Tuesday's win went to Bryant Salgado (6-4) with four shutout innings in relief and just two hits allowed and four strikeouts. Nic Swanson opened the game with five innings and two earned runs off the home runs and five strikeouts.

For the fourth game in a row, the Pelicans allowed at least a run in the first inning. Loperfido hammered the first pitch he saw over the left-field fence for a solo home run. It was his sixth home run of the season.

Myrtle Beach responded with Made going deep on the second pitch of his at-bat to left field for his eighth home run of the year to tie the game 1-1.

The Pelicans took a 2-1 lead as Mora lifted a 3-2 pitch over the left-field bleachers for another solo shot with one out in the bottom of the second.

The game would tie back up in the top of the third after Cody Orr walked and stole second with one out. Cerny hit him in on a line drive up the middle for an RBI single as the Woodpeckers tied the game 2-2.

That tie lasted until the top of the eighth inning with Gonzalez on the mound for Myrtle Beach. Rivas led off by taking a 2-1 pitch over the right-field wall to break the tie on his fourth home run of the year. Orr drew a walk on Gonzalez as Gonzalez gave way to Luis Rodriguez on the mound. His second pitch was sent into the left-field seats off the bat of Cerny for a two-run home run to make it 5-2 Woodpeckers. It was Cerny's 14th homer of the year.

The Pelicans were retired in order in the eighth and ninth innings to end the game.

Myrtle Beach and Fayetteville will square off for game two on Wednesday night with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
