PERFECT CAMERON START WASTED IN 5-1 LOSS: After a Noah Cameron perfect handful of innings on the bump, the bullpen allowed five runs the next four innings as Columbia couldn't hold on in a 5-1 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds Wednesday afternoon at Segra Park. Delmarva (7-16) got things going against reliever Heribert Garcia (L, 2-2) in the sixth inning. Isaac De Leon homered to lead off the frame to tie the game 1-1. After a walk, Garcia served up another homer to Luis Valdez to put the Shorebirds in front 3-1. Garcia allowed one run in both the seventh and eighth innings, which put the Fireflies (8-15) in a 5-1 rut for the final.
SOUTHPAW SIZZLES: Fireflies starter Noah Cameron had the best start of his young career Wednesday afternoon at Segra Park. The lefty went five innings and tied a career-high with seven punchouts. If that weren't enough, the Missouri native faced the minimum during that stretch, retiring all 15 hitters he saw at Segra Park. Following the outing, Cameron has now made three of his five starts at Segra Park, and he's enjoying the home cooking. In 12 innings at home, Cameron has maintained a 2.25 ERA and fanned 14 hitters while holding opponents to a .128 average.
HIP HIP, JAQUEZ: Rubendy Jaquez has bounced around the Royals farm the last two seasons. The utlility infielder has appeared at second, shortstop, third and even pitched a game for the Columbia Fireflies and he has also spent time with the Quad Cities River Bandits in each of the 2021 and 2022 campaigns. Used as a utility infielder, Jaquez has gotten inconsistent playing time, but the veteran has adopted the "always ready" mantra. In six games with Columbia this season, Jaquez is hitting .318 and he launched his first homer of the season in the fourth innign of yesterday's game vs the Delmarva Shorebirds. Jaquez has hits in five of his first six games in Columbia this season.
CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR: After an 0-9 performance with runners in scoring position during yesterday's game, the Fireflies have gone 2-20 with runners threatening in this series vs Delmarva. As a whole this season, Columbia is hitting .222 with runners in scoring position this year. To put that in perspective, opponents are averaging .253 in the same circumstances.
SOMEBODY SAVE ME: Reliever Luis Barroso has been the guy in late and close situations for the Columbia Fireflies. This season, the Fireflies have converted two saves in three opportunities and all three of those situations have come with the Panama native on the bump. Barroso has converted back-to-back opportunities.
THE DECISION MAKER: Fireflies starter Luinder Avila has made five starts this season, and he has received five decisions. He is settled with a 2-3 record and through 22 games, he has both the most wins and the most losses for the Fireflies pitching staff. One could say that he makes the decision of what the outcome of the game will be.
CRAFTY CERANTOLA: Last night, the Fireflies starter, Eric Cerantola, continued his hot stretch, notching eight innings and 14 strikeouts while allowing just a pair of runs to score in his last two outings. The righty has seen his ERA decline from 10.80 to 4.76 during the stretch.
MAKE-A-WISH: Fireflies Star Wars Jerseys are available at MiLBAuctions.com. Proceeds benefit Make-A-Wish.
