Colts Shut Out the Trout

January 18, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Brampton Steelheads News Release

Coming off a 5-3 home loss to the Belleville Bulls, the Mississauga Steelheads travelled to Barrie Saturday night to take on their divisional rival in the Colts. The Colts, currently one of the hottest teams in the league, topped the North Bay Battalion 2-1 in a shootout Thursday to earn the top spot in the Central Division.

Cameron Zanussi would get the nod in net for the Trout, and Daniel Gibl for the Colts. Joseph Blandisi who recently signed with the New Jersey Devils as a free agent would put Zanussi to the test early on, but the Trout netminder was ready to make the glove save. The Fish found their stride a few minutes into the period as MacIntyre fed Clark a great pass in front of the Colts' net, but Gibl was there to make the stop on Clark's backhand attempt. At 5:02 Bastian would head to the box on a hooking call, giving the Colts their first power play opportunity of the game. Despite being a man down, the Trout jumped on the attack and Babintsev caught Gibl out of position as the puck redirected onto his stick off the back boards, but he was unable to find the back of the net. Close to the midway point of the period, Cody Thompson and Adrian Carbonara would drop the gloves and head to their respective boxes with coincidental 5-minute majors. There were a number of quality chances both ways, but the game would remain scoreless heading into the first intermission.

The second period began similar to the first, with Zanussi stepping up with a key save to keep the Colts off the board. Barrie would head back to the power play at 5:10, as Bourne served 2 minutes for high-sticking. Zottl joined Bourne 11 seconds later after taking a cross-checking penalty, giving the Colts a 5-on-3 opportunity. Zanussi was the saving grace for the Trout, stopping a number of chances and robbing Andrew Mangiapane with an impressive glove save. The Colts would finally solve Zanussi at 6:48 as Lemieux rifled a shot from the top of the faceoff circle. Justin Scott would give the Colts a 2-goal cushion with time winding down in the second. Brandon Prophet took a check to the head penalty late in the period, allowing the Trout to close out the frame (and start the third period) on the power play.

Coming into the final frame with the momentum of the man-advantage, the Trout looked to get on the board and narrow the gap, but were unable to capitalize. Blandisi had a chance to extend the Colts' lead on a shorthanded opportunity, but rang his shot off the crossbar. Mangipane would seal the win for the Colts with an empty net goal as Gibl earned the shutout and the Colts improved their streak in the past 10 games to 9-1-0-0.

The Steelheads return home to the Hershey Centre tomorrow to host the Owen Sound Attack for a 2:00 pm start.
