Ottawa 67's News Release
The Ottawa 67's capped a three-game, 6-point weekend with a 5-1 victory over the Peterborough Petes on Sunday afternoon in front of a large and lively crowd at TD Place. Ottawa put the game out of reach with goals from Orleans native Curtis Meighan, acquired in the Eric Bradford trade with Owen Sound last week, and Brendan Bell, his 10^th of the season.
Sam Studnicka scored on a power play near the mid-way point of the first period to give the 67's a 1-0 lead. The Petes evened it late in the period with Josh MacDonald notching his 21^st of the season on a 2-man Petes advantage (Salituro and Mallette in the box for Ottawa). Studnicka then notched his 12^th of the season to put Ottawa back on top in the first 5 minutes of the second period and Nathan Todd gave Ottawa a 2-goal lead on a 67's PP with 2 and a half minutes left in the period.
Captain Travis Konecny missed the game after being suspended for a slew-foot penalty in round-one against the Petes Saturday night in Peterborough. Konecny will also miss the team's next game against Belleville because of the incident.
Sunday's game was also a fundraiser for Smiths Falls Bears forward Neil Doef who suffered a severe spinal cord injury in a game last month. Doef's teammates from the Bears took to the ice as part of a pre-game ceremony that also featured Neil's grandfather, Ernie Beaupre. The Bears collected donations for DoefStrong, a campaign to support Neil's rehabilitation and to fund modifications that may be required to the family home once Neil is able to leave hospital. Robbie Clouthier of the Ottawa Nepean Canadians Sports Club kicked this off with a $1,000 donation. The 67's contributed proceeds from the 50/50 draw and the jerseys off their backs for an online auction in support of DoefStrong. All jerseys will be autographed are now available to the highest bidder by linking to the auction site from www.Ottawa67s.com. The auction closes at the end of the month.
In Saturday's first game of the home-and-home series, the Pete's and 67's battled to a 2-all draw during regulation and they were scoreless OT, setting the stage for the shootout and a 3-2 Ottawa victory. Goalie Leo Lazarev shut the door on 5 Petes' shooters and Ottawa rookie Travis Barron notched the game winner. Brendan Bell scored the equalizer for the 67's midway through the 3^rd to set the stage for OT. Dante Salituro drew an assist on that goal and Jeremiah Addison's 11^th of the season earlier in the game. Konecny's slew-foot match penalty was handed down with only 15-seconds left in the first period.
Friday night's 4-2 win over Owen Sound at TD Place showcased a playoff level of intensity by the home team. From start to finish, they skated, back-checked, blocked shots and earned their 2 points against an Attack squad that battled hard to the end. Captain Konecny got the game winner at 7:53 of the 3rd period and Brendan Bell notched an insurance marker only 23-seconds later. Liam Herbst stood tall between the pipes making 26 saves. Salituro, Nevin Guy and Addison each had 2 assists. Addison and defencemen Evan de Haan and Ryan Orban all made a return from the injury list in this game.
Coming up this week, the 67's host the Bellville Bulls on Friday night with a rare off day on Sunday. Next week, the pace picks up with home games against Oshawa on Tuesday Jan. 27 (a make-up game for the early season ice melt in the arena), Sarnia on Friday and then the much anticipated game on Sunday February 1^st against Conner McDavid and the Erie Otters. That game, a 3:00 PM start due to national Sportsnet TV coverage, is already approaching sell-out levels so order your tickets and parking ASAP at www.Ottawa67s.com. And try to see at least one of the other three before Erie comes to town. This is your team and we don't want you to be surprised by how good they are.
