San Angelo Colts News Release
LAREDO, Texas - After losing to the San Angelo Colts (36-24) twice earlier this season, Laredo Broncos starter Santo Hernandez (7-4) picked up his first win against the Colts in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader, earning the Broncos a split of the twin bill. Hernandez allowed just three hits in the seven-inning contest, as the Broncos took their first lead of the series in the fifth and went on to win 3-1, salvaging their only game of the three-game series.
The Colts have now won two out of three four times versus Laredo and also swept the Broncos once, as San Angelo dominates the season series, 11-4.
The Colts scored first for the third time in series, taking a 1-0 edge in the second inning off Hernandez. Aaron Cone walked to lead off the inning, went to third on a double by Jason Landreth, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Frichter. After that double though, Hernandez retired 14 of the next 15 and allowed just three baserunners the rest of the way.
San Angelo starter Brian Henschel (7-3) posted seven victories in his last seven starts but had that streak snapped despite throwing a complete game tonight. In the second, with two out and nobody on base, the right-hander allowed three straight singles tying the game at 1-1.
After 20 ½ innings, the Broncos took their first lead of the series in the fifth. Matt Lawman, who drove in the first run, singled with one out and went to third on a double by Anthony Bennett. Ivan Reyes then brought them both in with a two-run single up the middle, making it 3-1 Laredo.
The Colts got a two-out single by Wyn Diggs in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate but Hernandez struck out pinch-hitter Jack Chapman to end the game. Hernandez went seven innings, allowing just one run on only three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Henschel gave up three runs on nine hits with one strikeout and no walks, as he induced one double play in each of his last three innings, including two to end innings.
Due to the threat of Hurricane Dolly, the Colts and Broncos will not play on Wednesday and instead played a doubleheader today, consisting of two seven-inning games, to wrap up the series. After an unexpected off-day on Wednesday, the Colts return home on Thursday, July 24 to begin a 10-game, nine-day homestand, starting with a Miller Lite "Thirsty Thursday," when 16 oz. bottles of beer are just $2. Advertising, ticket, and group information are available by calling the box office at (325) 942-6587. All Colts games are broadcast live on "Cool 100" - KCLL 100.1 FM and online at the Colts' official website, www.sanangelocolts.com, which is updated daily with the latest team news.
