San Angelo Colts News Release
LAREDO, Texas - Coming into Monday's series opener, the San Angelo Colts (35-23) had won all four series they've played against the Laredo Broncos (30-34) this season, including one series sweep. And after a 6-4 win on Monday, the Colts are now 10-3 versus the Broncos this year and are in good shape to win another series from Laredo heading into Tuesday's series-ending doubleheader.
Due to an overwhelming chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday and the looming threat of Hurricane Dolly, the Colts and Broncos will not play on Wednesday and instead will play a doubleheader on Tuesday. The teams will play two seven-inning games to wrap up the series, with game one beginning at 6:05 p.m. CT.
On Monday, the Colts never trailed as they took a 1-0 lead in the third and then scored in four straight innings from the fifth through the eighth to take leads of 5-0 and 6-1. In the third, John Anderson doubled with two out and then scored on an RBI triple off the center field wall by Jose Torres.
The Colts plated two runs in the fifth after they loaded the bases with one out against Broncos starter Sean Donlin (2-3), making his first appearance of the year against San Angelo. Charley Belew, who singled to lead off the frame, later scored on a passed ball. Tyrone Pendergrass, who also singled, later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
The Colts grabbed a 4-0 edge when Aaron Cone homered to lead off the sixth, going deep for the 10th time this year. Donlin left the game after six innings and was replaced by Rhett Barber, who surrendered a run in the seventh and one more in the eighth. Torres led off the seventh with a walk, stole second and third, and scored when Luany Sanchez' throw to third base went into left field. An RBI single by Broncos DH Edgard Clemente in the bottom of the seventh made it 5-1, but the Colts regained a five-run lead in the eighth when Belew led off the frame with a walk and later came home on a sac fly by Torres.
Laredo made things interesting with two more runs off Chris Weast in the eighth as Ivan Reyes hit a solo home run and Anthony Bennett hit an RBI single to make it 6-3. Colts closer Mitch Lively replaced Weast in the eighth and faced two batters (who each represented the tying run in their respective at-bats) and retired both of them to end the threat and preserve a 6-3 lead. Lively did give up a solo home run to Clemente to begin the bottom of the ninth to make it 6-4, but he retired three of the next four batters to end the game and record his third save.
Colts starter Logan Williamson (8-3) picked up his team-leading eighth win of the season, throwing six scoreless innings, allowing seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Donlin gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. The Broncos couldn't find the big hit all night, as they left 13 men on base and hit into one double play. Also, after the first two pitches of the bottom of the fifth, the lights went out at Veterans Field and there was a 25-minute delay until power was restored.
The Colts conclude this three-game set in Laredo with a doubleheader starting at 6:05 p.m. CT on Tuesday, July 22. The Colts return home on Thursday, July 24 to begin a 10-game, nine-day homestand, starting with a Miller Lite "Thirsty Thursday," when 16 oz. bottles of beer are just $2.
