Colts clinch series, win opener of twin bill

San Angelo Colts News Release

LAREDO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts (36-23) won game one of Tuesday's doubleheader, 5-2, over the Laredo Broncos (30-35), clinching their fifth series win in five series against Laredo this season. Even if the Colts lose the nightcap, San Angelo will still have won two of three in the series after taking the opener on Monday, 6-4.

Due to the threat of Hurricane Dolly, the Colts and Broncos will not play on Wednesday and instead are playing a doubleheader today, consisting of two seven-inning games, to wrap up the series.

The Colts, who still have not trailed in the series, took a 4-0 lead in the third against Laredo starter Gregorio Martinez (4-3). John Anderson led off the inning with a single, stole second and third, and scored on an errant throw to third base by catcher Josue Gonzalez. Jose Torres went to second on that error and scored on an RBI single by Andres Rodriguez, who then scored on a two-run homer by Aaron Cone, his 11th of the year, making it 4-0.

Bryan Frichter hit his eighth home run of the season on the first pitch of the sixth inning, a solo shot to left off Martinez, giving the Colts a 5-0 lead.

After Colts starter Billy McKinney (3-4) held the Broncos scoreless for five innings (and hitless for 3 1/3), he gave way to Miliade Venas, who allowed a run in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Luany Sanchez and Edgard Clemente to make it 5-1. An RBI single by Gonzalez in the seventh off Venas made it 5-2 and after the Broncos got two men on base with two out, Mitch Lively came in for what turned out to be a one-pitch save as he induced Sanchez, representing the tying run, to fly out to end the game. Lively, who worked a five-out save last night, recorded his fourth save of the season.

Tyrone Pendergrass left the game in the bottom of the second after he injured his shoulder while making an outstanding diving catch to rob Dwayne White. With the injury, John Anderson went from second base to left field, Torres went from left to right, Frichter went from right to center, and Joe Rhomberg entered the game as the new second baseman. On the RBI single by Gonzalez in the seventh, Torres made maybe the play of the game when he threw out Steven Wright trying to go first to third for the first out of the inning.

The Colts return home on Thursday, July 24 to begin a 10-game, nine-day homestand, starting with a Miller Lite "Thirsty Thursday," when 16 oz. bottles of beer are just $2. Advertising, ticket, and group information are available by calling the box office at (325) 942-6587. All Colts games are broadcast live on "Cool 100" - KCLL 100.1 FM and online at the Colts' official website, www.sanangelocolts.com, which is updated daily with the latest team news.
