Colorado Rapids News Release
BYE-WEEK EXHIBITION: The Colorado Rapids defeated the Colorado Springs Blizzard (PDL) 4-1 in an exhibition match played on Sunday, July 10th in Colorado Springs, CO. The Black and Blue's goals came from midfielders Kyle Beckerman and Alain Nkong, as well as forwards Jeff Cunningham and Luchi Gonzalez. The lone goal for the Blizzard came from midfielder Brian Contreras.
ANOTHER ADDITION FROM THE OPEN TRYOUTS: The Colorado Rapids announced the addition of defender Stephen Keel to the team's developmental roster on Monday, July 11, 2005. Keel, who caught the attention of the Rapids coaching staff during the team's Open Tryouts at the beginning of the season, becomes the second Colorado native to make the team after being spotted during that event; the Littleton, Colorado resident joins Josh Elbaum from Denver in that category. The 6-0 defender played college soccer at Wake Forest University.
TRYING OUT: With the second international transfer window opening on August 15th, the Colorado Rapids will have a number of players coming into camp for coach Fernando Clavijo to evaluate for potential additions to the Black and Blue. Two of the players that came in last Friday and saw some action in the Rapids' exhibition match against the Blizzard last weekend were Mexican players Montezuma Serrato and Edson Alvarado. Serrato, a 6-1 forward that has played for Club America, San Luis, and Tecos, captured the Mexican first division championship with Pumas in 2004. Alvarado, a left side attacking midfielder, has played for many clubs in the Mexican first division, including Necaxa, Santos, Tigres, Tecos and Monterrey. He also has two Mexican first division championships under his belt, winning them in 1994 and 1995 with Necaxa.
RAPIDS PRESENT THE âCOPA FORD UNIVISION': The Colorado Rapids and Univision have teamed up to bring all Colorado soccer fans the Copa Ford Univision 6 vs. 6 Soccer Tournament, which will take place this weekend (July 16 and 17) at the Fort Logan Soccer Fields in Denver. Participants will have the opportunity to test their skills in small-sided soccer games for male, female and coed teams of all abilities, ages 5 to adult. The games are played on small-sided fields (30 x 40 yards) with small goals (4 x 10feet), with no goalies. The tournament will be held at the Fort Logan Soccer Fields this Saturday, July 16 from 9 AM to 6 PM and Sunday, July 17 from 9 AM to 6 PM. The winners of the tournament will qualify for the 2005 World Finals, taking place in August at the Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World in Orlando. PABLO GONE: Rapids Team Captain Pablo Mastroeni is currently with the US National Team that is participating in the 2005 Gold Cup. Mastroeni, who did not see action in the USA's first game against Cuba, played the entire 90 minutes in the team's 2-0 win over Canada. The team's next match will take place at Gillette Stadium when they take on Costa Rica on July 12.
