Colorado Eagles Weekly Update
February 11, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Las Vegas Wranglers held off the Colorado Eagles' comeback attempt for a 4-2 win in a scheduled late-night contest as part of Las Vegas' annual "Over 18 Night." The teams entered the game with identical point totals on the season, but Collin Bowman 's two third period goals weren't enough for Colorado to overcome Las Vegas' 3-0 lead, and an empty-netter helped the Wranglers move ahead of the Eagles in the Western Conference standings.
Wednesday, February 6; Eagles Double Up Komets, 2-1
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Fort Wayne Komets, 2-1, in the first of three meetings between the teams this week at the Budweiser Events Center. Colorado continued its recent trend of heavily out-shooting its opponent -- registering a 38-24 advantage -- but was able to get just two pucks past Charlie Effinger .
Friday, February 8; Komets Edge Eagles, 6-5
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Fort Wayne Komets edged the Colorado Eagles, 6-5, in a game full of twists and turns that evened the week's series at one game apiece. Four of Colorado's goals came via their league-leading power play, but it was Fort Wayne's four-goal first -- matching the most goals allowed in a period all season for Colorado -- that played a large part in the Komets' win.
Saturday, February 9; Eagles Dominate Komets, 6-1, to Take Series
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Fort Wayne Komets, 6-1, to take the week's three-game set, two games to one. Colorado held the Komets to just 14 shots in the contest, setting a new season low for shots allowed, while they scored their six goals on 30 shots.
THE WEEK AHEAD
Friday, February 15 & Saturday, February 16; Eagles Look to Stay Perfect Against Condors
The Eagles are 5-0-0 so far this season against the Bakersfield Condors, including 2-0-0 in "Condorstown," and they'll be looking to continue both trends this weekend in a pair of games that will close out the season series between the teams. The Eagles have out-scored the Condors -- who enter the week with the ECHL's worst record -- by a 2:1 clip both overall (16-8) and in Bakersfield (6-3).
Sunday, February 17; Colorado Looks For First Win Against Top-Ranked Reign
After finishing their season series with the Condors, the Eagles will travel south to Ontario in a literal "worst to first" trip to take on the Reign, who enter the week with the ECHL's best winning percentage (.740). The Eagles are 0-3-0 against Ontario this season, including 0-1-0 in California. Last season, Colorado went 2-2-0 in Ontario last season with each team tallying 15 goals.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
TALKING SHOTS - The Eagles held the Komets to just three shots in the first frame of Saturday night's win on the way to holding them to just 14 in the entire game. The three shots in a period tied a season low, while the 14 shots not only set a new season low, it was the second-fewest in team history -- one off the record of 13. That low total in itself helped the Eagles nearly tie another team record for fewest combined shots in a game -- the 44 just five off the record of 39.
SPECIAL GOALS - Steve Haddon's shorthanded goal on Saturday night was the 10th for Colorado this season, tying them for the league lead in the category. The Eagles have also scored the most power-play goals (58), meaning that they have more special teams goals than any other team in the league.
KILLING IT SOFTLY - Colorado's penalty killing has improved over the past several weeks even though it remains low in the overall league standings. The team successfully killed 15-of-16 Fort Wayne power plays during last week's three-game series, and has had three perfect performances over its past five games. Moreover, the Eagles haven't allowed more than a single power play goal in their past seven contests.
50-POINT PERFORMERS - Michael Forney & Trent Daavettila have become the first two Eagles to reach the 50-point plateau this season. Forney leads the team with 52 points in 48 games, while Daavettila has 50 in 49. Forney's 23 goals lead the team (and rank 4th in the ECHL) and Daavettila's 36 assists pace the Eagles (and rank 6th in the league).
PIPE DREAMS - Kyle Jones added to his club record for wins when he picked up his 70th Saturday night, and when he appears in his next game he'll take over the club record in that category as well. Jones has now played in 119 games for Colorado, tying him with Andrew Penner. Overall, the two have posted nearly identical statistics for the Eagles (Jones/Penner): games played (119/119), minutes played (6,835/6,754), wins (70/68), losses (37/34), overtime/shootout losses (9/10), goals against (346/340), saves (3,221/3,116), goals against average (3.04/3.02) & save percentage (.903/.902).
WATCH OUT FOR THE WILDLIFE - The Eagles will head to Bakersfield for a pair of games Friday & Saturday, looking to stay perfect against the Condors this season. So far, Colorado is 5-0-0 against Bakersfield, including a mark of 2-0-0 in Condorstown. All-time, the Eagles are 7-2-0 in Bakersfield.
LOOKING UP AT THE REIGN - Colorado will continue its travels through California with a Sunday afternoon match-up against the Ontario Reign -- the Eagles' first of three Sunday matinees in the next four weeks. Colorado is 0-3-0 so far this season against the Reign, who enter the week with the ECHL's top winning percentage (.740). The Eagles lost their only game in Ontario this season by a 3-2 score, and are 2-3-0 there all-time.
