Colorado Eagles News Release
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW
Tuesday, January 24; Winnipeg Jets Assign Defenseman Chiarot to Eagles
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets & the AHL's St. John's IceCaps, announced today that the Jets have re-assigned rookie defenseman Ben Chiarot (pronounced: sher-ot) from the IceCaps to the Eagles.
Chiarot, a former 4th round draft pick of the Atlanta Thrashers (#120 overall in 2009), has played in 14 games with the IceCaps this season, posting a goal, an assist, 19 penalty minutes and a minus-five plus/minus rating.
Prior to this season, the 6-foot-3-inch, 222-pound defenseman recorded 70 points (20-50-70) & 405 PIMs in four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League.
Wednesday, January 25; Las Vegas Clips Eagles in Final Minute of Overtime
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Las Vegas Wranglers edged the Colorado Eagles, 3-2, with a goal in the final minute of overtime. Eric Lampe -- the ECHL's leading goal scorer -- notched both of the Wranglers' regulation goals as he continued his personal success against Colorado (21 points in seven games).
Thursday, January 26; Winnipeg Jets Re-Assign Marto to IceCaps
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets & the AHL's St. John's IceCaps, announced today that the Jets have re-assigned rookie defenseman Jake Marto to the IceCaps for the third time this season.
In his two prior stints with St. John's, Marto has played in a dozen games, registering three assists and two penalty minutes. He's played in 20 games for the Eagles in the ECHL, recording five assists and 10 PIMs.
Friday, January 27; Las Vegas Deals Eagles' First Home Shutout in ECHL
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Las Vegas Wranglers blanked the Colorado Eagles, 5-0, handing them their first home shutout in the ECHL & just their second at home in team history. Joe Fallon stopped 26 shots, netting his league-leading 22nd win in the process, as the 2nd-place Wranglers (27-13-4, 58 pts.) were too much for a depleted Eagles lineup (just 14 skaters) in the second game of this week's three-game set between the squads.
Saturday, January 28; Winnipeg Jets Re-Assign Marto to Eagles
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets & the AHL's St. John's IceCaps, announced today that the Jets have re-assigned rookie defenseman Jake Marto from the IceCaps to the Eagles just two days after his third call-up of the season.
Marto has skated in a dozen games in the AHL this season -- although none in this most recent call-up -- registering three assists and two penalty minutes. He's played in 20 games for the Eagles in the ECHL, recording five assists and 10 PIMs. He's scheduled to be in Colorado's lineup tonight.
Saturday, January 28; Wranglers Sweep Series at BEC
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Las Vegas Wranglers defeated the Colorado Eagles, 6-2, taking the third game in four nights this week at the Budweiser Events Center. Steve Haddon took advantage of fortunate bounces in getting both of Colorado's goals, while five different Wranglers found the back of the net.
THE WEEK AHEAD
Friday, Feb. 3 & Saturday, Feb. 4; Eagles Look to Add to Condors' Hard Times at Home
Looking to end a franchise record-tying four-game winless streak, the Eagles will head to Bakersfield for a pair of games this weekend against the league's cellar-dwelling Condors (10-29-5). The Condors have struggled equally at home (5-13-4) and on the road (5-16-1) this season, but two of those home wins have come at Colorado's expense (2-2-0 at Rabobank Arena). The Eagles will need to get their offense humming to beat Bakersfield. During their current four-game winless streak, the Eagles have not surpassed two goals in any game. But they've averaged just 2.25 goals/game in Condorstown.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
GAMBLED & LOST - Colorado certainly struggled last weekend against the 2nd-place Wranglers. In addition to being shutout for just the second time in team history on home ice Friday night, they were held to a season low three shots in a period on Saturday night. And when it came to the defensive side of the ice, the Eagles allowed a total of 11 goals in the two games. Their goaltenders' collective GAA this season against Las Vegas is .848.
BIRD FIGHT - The Eagles are 4-2-0 against the Condors this season, but just 2-2-0 in "Condorstown." The second half of that sentence is the most surprising since the Condors enter the week with one of the worst home records in the ECHL. Their 14 points on home ice (5-13-4) are just one more than Reading's 13, and leave them as one of just four teams in the league with home points in the teens.
BIRDMAN - Like the Denver Nuggets' Chris Anderson, Kyle Jones seems to rise to new heights when he plays the Condors. Of all the teams he's played at least four games against in his Eagles career, Jones has posted his best numbers against Bakersfield. He has a 3-1-0 record, along with a 1.50 GAA & a .958 SV%.
IN NEED OF A WIN - The Eagles are on a couple of streaks that history says should end. They've gone winless in four straight, including three straight at home. In their history, they've never gone five games in a row without a win, only hitting a four-game skid six times in nine and a half years. And the three-game winless streak at the BEC ties for the second-longest all-time, one off the record.
RECIPE FOR SUCCESS - This season's statistics paint a pretty clear picture of the type of game Colorado needs to play in order to win: it involves scoring early & often. When the Eagles are ahead or tied at the first intermission, they're 17-3-3. And when they score at least three goals, they're 22-4-4. Out-shooting their opponents also helps, as the Eagles are 13-6-2 when doing so.
