Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings gained their first lead with 45 seconds remaining in regulation, but the Cincinnati Cyclones fought back not only to tie the game, but to win 3-2 in overtime Friday night at Wings Stadium on Culver's Night.
The first period yielded no goals for either squad, but not for lack of opportunities. Cincinnati was unable to score on an extended 5-on-3 power play that lasted nearly a minute and a half. Maxime Clermont stopped all 15 shots his faced through the first and Cincinnati goaltender Chet Pickard was perfect on the seven shots fired by the K-Wings.
Finally breaking through on the scoreboard, a quick wrist shot from Dave Leaderer (5th) gave the Cyclones a 1-0 advantage 12:14 into the second period.
Kalamazoo pulled even midway in the third period, when on a line change, Brent Clarke (1st) stepped onto the ice to intercept a blue-line pass and bury a slap shot past Pickard.
Getting the crowd of 3,572 into a frenzy, Bryan Haczyk (11th) lifted a backhander with under a minute remaining to give the K-Wings their lone lead of the night; however, the K-Wings celebration was short lived.
Just 33 seconds after Haczyk put Kalamazoo up 2-1, Cincinnati, with Pickard pulled for an extra skater, responded with a rebound equalizer from Mathieu Aubin (17th) to force overtime.
Early in overtime, Kalamazoo was whistled for too many men on the ice and the penalty would be costly. In the ensuing power-play, Cincinnati's Taylor Aronson (2nd) rocketed a shot over the shoulder of Clermont for the game-winner 2:24 into the extra session.
With 42 saves, Clermont (7-5-1-0) established a new personal career-best and season-high for Kalamazoo.
Saturday, January 28th @ Wheeling (Kalamazoo 2-Wheeling 1)
Wheeling, WV- Erasing a third period deficit, the Kalamazoo Wings scored two unanswered in the final 20 minutes to defeat the Wheeling Nailers 2-1 Saturday night at the WesBanco Arena.
Despite being outshot 9-6 in the opening period, an early power-play opportunity put the Nailers on the scoreboard. Finding a loose puck to the left of K-Wings goaltender Riley Gill, Nick Peterson (2nd) scored 4:52 into the first period give Wheeling a 1-0.
No scoring in the second period, kept the Nailers ahead heading into the final 20 minutes. Fighting back midway in third period, Dustin Cloutier (3rd) pulled the K-Wings even scoring the equalizer with a power-play marker 12:37 into the stanza.
Earning their lone lead of the night, Darryl Bootland (13th) placed a wrister over the shoulder of Patrick Killeen for the eventual game-winner 17:28 into the period.
Making 31 saves on the evening, Gill earned his 15th victory of the season.
Sunday, January 30th Vs Reading (Kalamazoo 5-Reading 1)
Kalamazoo, MI- Needing no Jedi mind tricks, the Kalamazoo Wings used timely scoring and strong goaltender from Maxime Clermont to defeat the Reading Royals 5-1 on Star Wars Night at Wings Stadium.
Coming out firing on all cylinders following the pregame ceremony celebrating Kory Karlander's 1,000th professional career game, the K-Wings dominated the opening 20 minutes.
A night after Darryl Bootland recorded the game-winner; Bootland forged Kalamazoo by notching his 14th goal of the season 11:38 into the first period.
Extending their lead three minutes later, Mike Matczak (9th) deflected an Elgin Reid slap shot over the shoulder of Michael Hutchinson.
Capping off a stretch of three goals in a span of 3:31, Dustin Cloutier lifted a shot from the slot 52 seconds after Matczak's tally to push the K-Wings advantage to three goals.
Kalamazoo kept up the scoring barrage in the second period with a tally from Darren Archibald (6th). Camped out in front to the Royals net, Archibald tipped in a Joe Charlebois slap shot midway through the period. Also assisting the tally was Karlander.
Late in the stanza, Archibald (7th) became the 20th player this season for the K-Wings to have a multi-goal performance, knocking in his second goal of the contest off a Joe Tolles rebound.
Breaking the K-Wings shutout bid, Dale Mitchell (12th) one-timed a Casey Haines pass over Clermont 11:08 into the period.
Two nights after Clermont set a career-best (42) for saves in a game, the rookie netminder nearly matched it, stopping 41 shots to raise his record to 8-5-1-0
