Collier Cracks Crabs With Long Ball

August 23, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Zach Collier ended a personally tough road trip with a towering home run to right field in the top of the eighth, breaking a 4-4 tie and sending the Barnstormers to a 5-4 victory over Southern Maryland on Sunday afternoon at Regency Furniture Stadium.

The win guaranteed that the Barnstormers would lead the Freedom Division by at least 3 1/2 games heading into a three-game matchup with the second place York Revolution.

Collier, who had been 0-for-4 on the day and 4-for-29 on the trip, jolted the first pitch he saw from Orlando Santos (3-6) over the board in right with two outs and the bases clear in the eighth.

That capped Lancaster's second rally of the afternoon. The Barnstormers had tied the game in the seventh when Kevin Rivers' bases loaded grounder to second base was bobbled momentarily by Grant Zawadski, losing the possible double play, and allowing Kent Matthes to score the tying run.

Southern Maryland scored three runs with two outs in the third. Fred Lewis started the uprising working out a walk following a lengthy at bat against Joe Gardner. Gardner his Antone DeJesus with an 0-2 pitch, and Zach Wilson loaded the bases with an infield single to the hole at shortstop. Jovan Rosa walked on four pitches to force home one run, and Bryant Nelson bounced a single up the middle to plate two more.

Juan Apodaca's single behind third base plated one run in the top of the fourth. Mike McDade slammed a two-run homer in the fifth to tie the game.

Pete Andrelczyk (7-2), the first of three Lancaster relievers, earned the win. Scott Gracey worked a scoreless eighth, aided by a great throw by Matthes to nail Jamar Walton at second, and Marcus Walden survived a leadoff single in the ninth to earn his seventh save.

The Barnstormers will take on the York Revolution in the opener of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Monday. Lancaster will send Nate Reed (4-7) to the hill against Logan Williamson (7-9). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN, rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: McDade was 8-for-14 with two homers and five RBI in the series...Andrelczyk tied Gardner for the club lead in wins...Lancaster has won 22 one-run games on the year...Lancaster is 7-0-4 in series in the second half...The Barnstormers have not lost two straight in over a month.
