Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Sugar Land, TX) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (21-21, 47-65) were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters (19-23, 55-57) 4-3 at Constellation Field on Saturday evening. Bridgeport has now lost five consecutive games and fall to 1-5 on their current seven-game road trip in the Lone Star State.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Robert Carson (5-1) was tagged with the loss, tossing six and one-third innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits, walking four, and striking out two. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Kelvin Villa picked up a no-decision, lasting just four and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking two, and striking out four. Cory Van Allen (5-1) earned the victory for the Skeeters with a scoreless inning of relief, and Derrick Loop closed the game out striking out the side despite allowing a run on two hits, recording his 14th save of the season.
The Skeeters took a 2-0 lead off Carson in the home half of the fourth inning on an RBI double by Renny Osuna, scoring Chris Wallace who walked with one out in the frame, and a run-scoring single by Kevin Russo, plating Travis Scott who reached with a base knock of his own. Bridgeport answered right back in the top of the fifth with a pair of two-out runs runs off Villa to even up the ballgame 2-2. Josh Prince's booming triple brought home Ethan Chapman to cut the deficit in half after he reached with one man out on an infield single and then advanced into scoring positon on an error by Villa. Prince would score the tying-run on a double by All-Star Welington Dotel, making his return to the lineup after missing last night's from the effects of being hit by a pitch on Thursday evening.
Sugar Land would regain the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning again off Carson. Amadeo Zazueta began the rally with a leadoff single, and would score the lead run on an RBI double off the bat of Jeff Dominguez. The Skeeters added what turned out to be a giant-sized insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Delwyn Young, scoring Dominguez to give the home team a 4-2 edge. The 'Fish would not go down without a fight in the ninth inning off Loop. With Bridgeport down to their final out, Andres Rodriguez laced a double to keep the game alive. That brought up Matt Wessinger, who drove Rodriguez home with a hard hit single, and just like that the Skeeters were clinging to a 4-3 lead. Loop was able to settle down and strike out the potential go-ahead run in Chapman to end the game, and Sugar Land hung on by the skin of their teeth for the one-run victory. Andres Rodriguez and Matt Wessinger led the way for Bridgeport with two hits each, and for Andres Rodriguez it was his 17th multi-hit game of the 2015 campaign.
