Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters dropped an 8-6 decision to the Bridgeport Bluefish on Sunday night at Constellation Field after battling almost a two and a half hour rain delay. The loss snaps a five-game winning streak by the Skeeters and moves their record to 19-24 in the second half and 55-58 overall.
Patrick Palmeiro put the Skeeters on top early with a bomb in the bottom of the second. Renny Osuna led off the inning with a single, but a fielder's choice from Kevin Russo erased the leadoff single. Palmeiro followed with a two-run blast to left, snapping a 0-16 slump in his last five games. The Sugar Land third baseman recorded his first extra-base hit since July 26.
Bridgeport narrowed the gap in the top of the third. Matt Wessinger hit a single up the middle with one out and advanced to second on a hit-and-run groundout. Bryan Sabatella pulled a one-out single into the right-center alley to bring home Wessinger and move the score to 2-1.
The Bluefish would claim their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth. Welington Dotel doubled into the right-center alley, but was thrown out at third trying to stretch the two-bagger into a triple. John Alonso drew a walk before Andres Rodriguez hit a single into right. Wilson Valdez sliced a ground-rule double down the right field line to plate Alonso and tie the game. After a groundout and a walk, Ethan Chapman reached on a bases-loaded single just over the outstretched glove of Osuna to score a pair and give Bridgeport a 4-2 lead.
Following a rain delay of almost two and a half hours, Bridgeport came out and tagged Ramon Delgado for four quick runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 8-2.
The Skeeters mounted a monumental comeback in the bottom of the ninth, but six runs were too much to overcome. Jeff Dominguez drove home a pair on a double to right to trim the deficit to 8-5, but an RBI groundout and a strikeout ended the night for the Skeeters.
