COLLEGE PARK, Ga. - The College Park Skyhawks, the official NBA G League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks, announced today that the team will host their annual 'Celebrating Black History' game on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. when they face off against the Capital City Go-Go.
The Skyhawks will wear themed jerseys featuring a design and colors inspired by the colors of the Ethiopian flag, with the colors of red, symbolizing history, heritage, and sacrifice; yellow, symbolizing hope, justice, and equality; green, symbolizing development and agriculture; and black, symbolizing strength and creativity.
"Black history is at the forefront of the nation's excellence, prosperity and culture," said Skyhawks Manager of Game Presentation and Entertainment, Veronica Paul. "We are honored to feature figures of African American leadership that have not had an impact on just the Southside community, but the Country as a whole."
During the game, the Skyhawks will honor Dr. Walter Fuller Young as the Hometown Hero, the brother of Reverend Andrew Young and close friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Young played an integral role in addressing dental health maintenance and the establishment of dental programs across schools, churches, and organizations in the Atlanta area.
In 2004, Atlanta's Southwest YMCA was named for Young and his brother, Andrew.
The game will also showcase the work of local artist, Lydell Martin. Originally from Macon, Georgia, Martin moved to Atlanta at an early age and quickly rose to prominence, including painting portraits for the recipients of the 1996 Trumpet Awards Foundation, which included Tiger Woods and Harry Belafonte.
Martin's work has also been presented to prominent figures such as Tyler Perry, Aretha Franklin, Muhammad Ali, and President Barack Obama.
