CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Barons announced that Colin Ray from Gilmour Academy is the first winner of the "Sun News/Barons High School Journalist" contest. Michael T. Lehr, President of the Cleveland Barons, made the announcement.
Students entered the competition by submitting an 800-word essay on one of three topics including career ambitions, the future of hockey and the modern-day athlete Colin Ray, a Junior from Gilmour Academy, won the monthly contest by submitting an essay entitled "A Croquet Player In Today's Fast-Paced Society." The essay's were judged on creativity and overall writing principles. Ray's essay can be read by Crashing The Net at www.clevelandbarons.net
Ray will cover the Barons for a one-month period and will act as real media personnel. Ray will be supplied a full-access media credential and press box seat for each Barons game in November. At the end of his experience, Ray will write a feature story to be published in the Sun Newspapers.
The Barons will select four more winners throughout the course of the season. Students that submitted an essay remain eligible for each month. Any student wishing to send an entry essay can mail their work to: Cleveland Barons; Attn: High School Essay Contest; 200 Huron Road; Cleveland, OH 44115.
"Reading the essay entries made it clear that there is quite a bit of potential in Greater Cleveland," stated Lehr. "This program helps these aspiring journalists realize their potential by gaining hands-on experience in a professional working environment."
