Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to announce the signing of defenseman Cole Slobodian to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.

Slobodian, 17, is currently skating with the Virden Oil Capitals in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) and has produced four points in 22 games. Before starting his junior hockey career, the 6-foot-0, 185-pound blueliner spent two seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings U18 AAA program. He finished second on his team in defensive scoring with six goals and 26 assists for 32 points in 44 games during the 2022-23 campaign.

"We are very pleased to welcome Cole to the Winterhawks," said Winterhawks' Assistant to the General Manager and Director of Scouting Mike Coflin. "He has shown a strong and steady development path from Brandon U18 into the MJHL with Virden this season, and has emerged as a two-way defenseman for a very strong team. He plays an intelligent, poised style of play, and is quietly effective at both ends of the rink."

"An excellent student, he has the personal drive to succeed which will serve him well in our environment. Cole will provide a solid presence on the blueline for the Winterhawks in the coming years."

Slobodian was originally added to the Winterhawks' Protected List following the 2021 WHL Prospect Draft and has participated in the last two Neely Cup Training Camps.
