Erie Otters News Release

Windsor, Ontario - With a day of rest in Windsor separating the Erie Otters from their previous game - a big road win in St. Catharine's, ON against the Niagara IceDogs - and their Saturday night affair in Windsor, the team looked to build off a terrific start to their four-game Canadian road trip. Taking on the high-scoring Windsor Spitfires for the first time this season, Erie's defense would be tasked with shutting down a number of point-per-game scorers.

The Otters didn't come out with the most beneficial-of-starts, as just :62 into the period, they would head to the penalty kill for a delay of game. After a successful kill, the Otters would find themselves on the power play. Just over halfway through the man advantage, marvelous chaos would find its way to the goalmouth of Xavier Medina, as a loose-puck on the goal line would be forced through by Elias Cohen (5) for his 10th point in eight games. The Otters would go 1/1 on their power plays in the first period, and look to build upon the success through the period. Windsor would find another opportunity on the power play, but wouldn't be able to convert. The Otters would take a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes, as Windsor would lead in shots 13-7, but find themselves trailing at home.

Penalty trouble would continue in the second period, as the Otters would commit another three penalties in the third period to find themselves shorthanded for six full minutes. Erie's penalty killers would stand tall, and go five-for-five after two periods of play. Late in the second period, Erie would get its second opportunity on the power play, and once again, Elias Cohen (6) would be the difference maker, as the Otters converted on the man-advantage to take a 2-0 lead. Goaltender Nolan Lalonde would be the name-to-know as the period came to an end, as the rookie goaltender would see 23 saves under his belt - making another 10 saves in the second. With 40 in the book, Erie would trail in shots 23-15, but take a 2-0 lead into the final period.

The theme would be killing time for Erie in the third period, holding a 2-0 lead with 50 minutes gone by. As the Otters collected their third power play opportunity of the night, this would start the spell of doom for Erie, with Will Cullye scoring a shorthanded goal on a rocket off the faceoff win. 2-1 Otters held a lead. Cullye wouldn't be done yet, as :12 later, the Spitfires would knot things up 2-2. Windsor would control momentum the rest of the way, and both teams would fight to survive and advance to overtime. Just :33 into overtime, Wyatt Johnston would force his way through traffic, and beat Lalonde on the backhand to give Windsor a dramatic comeback win, and a heartbreaking loss for the Otters.

Erie picks up three of four possible points in the first two games of their Canadian road trip, and closes out the weekend on Sunday afternoon in Sarnia, taking on the Sting for the first time this season. Erie will end its four-game road trip in Guelph on Friday, November 12 before returning home to the Erie Insurance Arena to host the Ontario Hockey League's top-ranked team, the London Knights on Saturday, November 13. Saturday night will be the Otters annual Military Appreciation Night (pres. by UPMC Health Plan, UPMC Hamot, and Plyler Entry Systems), as the team looks to donate over 1500 tickets to active-duty and retired military personnel in the Erie community.
