New York Boulders News Release
(RAMAPO, NY) - Clutch hitting was the name of the game Tuesday night at Provident Bank Park as the Rockland Boulders (20-16) picked up the win by a score of 5-4 over the visiting Quebec Capitales (17-19) on Canada Day. The Boulders managed to get big hits in key situations as they held on to win the close game.
The Capitales opened the scoring immediately in the first inning off of Rockland starter, Sean Bierman. After Jonathan Malo reached on an error by Rockland shortstop, Junior Arrojo, Mike Provencher followed with an RBI double to put Quebec on top. Provencher would come around to score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Balbino Fuenmayor to give the Capitales an early 2-0 lead.
Rockland managed to answer in the second inning as they stormed back with three runs of their own. With Stephen Cardullo on first base and one out in the inning, Marcus Nidiffer blasted a two-run homer to the bleachers in left off of Quebec starter Karl Gelinas. Then after a two-out single by Matt Nandin, Antone DeJesus hit a booming RBI triple to the center field wall to give the Boulders a 3-2 lead.
The Boulders would add a run in the fourth inning with some clutch two-out hitting. With two outs and nobody on, Nandin and DeJesus hit back-to-back singles followed by an RBI single by Ryan Stovall as Rockland pushed the lead to 4-2. The Capitales would soon respond in the sixth inning with two runs to tie the ballgame. Sebastian Boucher led off the inning with a triple and came around to score on an RBI single by the next batter Fuenmayor. After two more singles loaded the bases, Tim Smith delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the ballgame at four.
With a tie game in the seventh inning, Steve Nysiztor slugged a double with one out in the inning. The next batter, Joe Maloney, then delivered what would ultimately be the game-winning hit with an RBI double to put Rockland ahead by a score of 5-4. The Boulders bullpen would eventually hold on for the win by the same score of 5-4.
Sean Bierman (2-4) picked up the win for the Boulders. Bierman allowed four runs on nine hits in seven innings of work while striking out four batters. Karl Gelinas (4-3) took the loss for the Capitales; allowing five runs on fourteen hits in six and one-third innings. Gelinas struck out three batters in the contest. Chad Robinson pitched a scoreless ninth for the Boulders to pick up his first save of the season.
DeJesus, Maloney, and Jerod Edmondson picked up three hits each for the Boulders as Rockland accumulated 15 hits in the game. Edmondson now has 696 career hits in the Can-Am league; just three shy of tying the all-time record of 699. Edmondson and the Boulders will be back in action Wednesday as Rockland takes on the Quebec Capitales at 7:00pm for Latino Night at Provident Bank Park.
