Indianapolis Indians News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Six Columbus pitchers combined to allow just one run and 10 hits over 16 innings en route to a doubleheader sweep of Indianapolis and series win in front of 6,602 Friday night at Cooper Stadium. The Clippers posted a 4-0 win over the Indians in the opener and 5-1 victory in the nightcap.
Game one was the continuation of a suspended game from Thursday night. Play was interrupted with no score in the third inning when heavy rain swept through central Ohio. Friday night's second game, a seven-inning tilt, was the regularly-scheduled contest.
The Clippers improve to 38-43 on the season and 21-23 at home, while the Indians fall to 44-36 overall and 20-22 on the road. The Tribe suffers its second straight four-game series setback and finishes its eight game road trip 1-7.
Four Columbus right-handers -- Tim Redding (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 SO), Levale Speigner (3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 SO), Winston Abreu (2.0 IP, 1 H, 3 SO) and Edward Valdez (1.0 IP, 1 H) -- combined to hand Indianapolis its fourth shutout loss of 2007 in the opener. Speigner collected the win, improving to 1-0.
CF Rogearvin Bernadina (0-for-3, 1 R) led off the Clippers' third with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on RF Brandon Watson's (1-for-4, 1 R) single to center. 2B Bernie Castro (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) followed with a double to left, scoring Bernadina and moving Watson to third. 3B Brent Abernathy (1-for-4, 1 RBI) then brought Watson plateward on an RBI groundout. Columbus tallied its final two runs in the seventh.
Tribe LHP Sean Burnett (2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO), who started the suspended game on Thursday night, fell to 4-5 with the game one loss.
Columbus RHP Joel Hanrahan (6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) improved to 3-2 with his third quality start in game two, while Bernadina (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) paced the offense with a pair of doubles.
The Clippers cracked the scoreboard with one run in their first at-bat as Watson (1-for-2, 1 R) singled to left, moved to second on a balk and advanced 90 feet closer on Abernathy's (2-for-3, 2 RBI) single to right. 3B Kory Casto (1-for-2, 1 RBI) then scored Watson with another base knock to right.
The Indians knotted the contest in the second when 1B Jose Hernandez (1-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) whacked his seventh home run of the season over the right-field wall.
The Clippers answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. The frame included four walks, a wild pitch and fielding error.
Indians RHP Marty McLeary (3.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 1 SO) suffered the loss in game two, falling to 4-3.
Columbus RHP Chris Booker (0.1 IP, 1 SO) recorded the game's final out for his league-leading 22nd save of the campaign.
