Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - Josh Johnson drove in the go-ahead run to complete a sixth inning rally for the Bulls, as they edged the Rochester Red Wings, 6-4 on Friday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Bulls entered the sixth inning down 4-2 but Chris Richard and Joel Guzman both singled and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Jorge Velandia to start the inning. Jason Pridie hit into an RBI groundout to score Richard and Guzman tied the game on a wild throw from Red Wings third baseman Tommy Watkins who was trying to retire Jeremy Owens. Owens stole second to move into scoring position, and then scored the go-ahead run on Johnson's RBI-double. Richard added an insurance run in the seventh inning to make the game 6-4 when he scored from third on another errant throw.
RHP Jeff Niemann (9-4) held the Wings to just four runs despite three defensive errors committed by the Bulls. He threw six innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. Thee of the runs came in the fifth inning Matt Tolbert hit into and RBI groundout and Glenn Williams drove in two on a single with bases loaded to give the Red Wings a 4-2 lead. RHP Chad Orvella pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn his tenth save of the season.
