LOUISVILLE, KY-Ryan Freel turned in his best offensive performance since joining the Bats six days ago for a rehab assignment, leading Louisville (42-39) over the Richmond Braves (45-34) by a final of 3-1. Freel went 3-for-4 and raised his Triple-A average to .385. He also scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on an Aaron Herr single to right field. Attendance at tonight's game was 9,438.
RHP Richie Gardner (2-0, 3.63) picks up the win for the Bats. Gardner pitched 6.0 innings, striking out six and allowing only one earned run. The six strikeouts are the most for Gardner since joining the Bats. His season high is nine, which he reached on May 23 as a member of the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts.
Richmond starter, Ryan Baerlocher (1-3, 3.31) gets the loss. The right-hander pitched 5.0 innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits.
Bats' left fielder Jeff Keppinger and third baseman Herr each had two hits respectively. Keppinger raised his International League leading batting average to .363. Herr singled twice and had two RBI.
The Braves managed seven hits collectively in the game. First baseman Graham Koonce went 2-for-4 and center fielder Gregor Blanco singled home the lone Richmond run in the third inning. Blanco went 1-for-4 and struck out twice.
Louisville opens a two-game home series with the Columbus Clippers Saturday at Louisville Slugger Field. In the previous seven meetings this season between the two clubs, the Bats have scored 33 runs in five wins, while only managing four runs in two losses. LHP Phil Dumatrait (7-5, 3.87) takes the mound for Louisville, while LHP Chris Michalak (3-2, 2.45) is slated to start for Columbus. Game time is set for 6:15 p.m.
