Clippers' Hold on to Take Game One over Rochester
August 13, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release
The Columbus Clippers used clutch hitting and stellar pitching to help themselves to a 2-1 victory over the Rochester Red Wings tonight in game one of a three-game set at Huntington Park.
Clippers' starter Josh Tomlin, down from Cleveland on a rehab assignment, and the bullpen each impressed in the win.
Tomlin allowed his lone run in the second inning when Rochester catcher Juan Graterol lifted a sac-fly to take a 1-0 lead. Tomlin shut things down after that, surrendering four hits and striking out four. He didn't walk a batter in four innings of work.
Shao-Ching Chiang took over after that, and the Clippers gave him the run support he needed after tossing a scoreless fifth.
With Eric Stamets, who led off with a double, on third, Connor Marabell laced a single to right to tie the game at 1-1.
The Clippers came through again in the sixth when Mike Papi drove a two-out double off the right field wall to score Joe Sever for a 2-1 lead.
Chiang continued to dominate after that, tossing four innings of one-hit ball. He didn't walk anyone and struck out three before handing the ball to Evan Marshall to close things out.
He did just that in the top of the ninth to secure the save and the 2-1 win.
The Clippers and Red Wings will be back at it tomorrow at Huntington Park for game two. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
