April 10, 2019 - South Atlantic League (SAL) - Lakewood BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - Hagerstown held off a Lakewood rally in the ninth and avoided a sweep with a 5-4 win over the BlueClaws on Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Park.

The BlueClaws had the bases loaded, down 5-3 in the ninth, when Alec Bohm hit a SAC fly to make it 5-4. Matt Kroon came up and grouned out to second base to end the game and preserve the win for Hagerstown. Aaron Fletcher, who got the last five outs, earned his first save of the season.

The loss drops the BlueClaws to 3-4 after their 0-3 start while the Suns improved to 2-5.

Hagerstown took the lead in the seventh off Jack Perkins (0-1). With two outs, KJ Harrisonsingled home a run and Jamori Blash drove in another in with a single to put the Suns ahead 4-2.

After the Suns added a run in the top of the eighth inning, the BlueClaws got a SAC fly from Jake Holmes to pull within 5-3 and move the tying run to second base. Aaron Fletcher, however, got Rafael Marchan to line out to short to end the inning.

Hagerstown opened the scoring in the third on an RBI double from Nic Perkins and an RBI single from Gage Canning for a 2-0 lead. Only one of the runs was earned after an earlier error from shortstop Luis Garcia.

Matt Kroon tied the game back up in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single on a 3-2 pitch to bring home Cole Stobbe and Yerwin Trejo.

Ryan Tapani (1-0) gave up one run in 2.1 innings to earn the win.

BlueClaws starter Tyler McKay gave up two runs, one earned, in four innings with five strikeouts and one walk. He did not factor in the decision.

Kroon, Jimmy Smith, and Carlos de la Cruz had two hits apiece for the BlueClaws.

The BlueClaws head to Delmarva for their first road game of the year on Thursday night at 7:05 pm. RHP Dominic Pipkin starts for Lakewood.
