Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Clay Chandler tossed six quality innings in his second start of the year, but West Virginia's offense was held to just three hits in a 2-1 loss to the Lexington Legends Wednesday afternoon at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

West Virginia (3-4) threatened early in the first, but was unable to drive in a run, leaving the bases loaded after Joseph Rosa grounded out to the pitcher, Charlie Neuweiler.

Unlike Neuweiler, Chandler had no issue navigating through the Lexington (3-3) order during the first four innings. The Paducah, Ky., native ultimately spun six innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five batters to pick up his first quality start of the year..

Lexington scored their lone run against Chandler in the fifth, as Juan Carlos Negret reached on an infield single to begin the frame. Chandler retired the next two batters he faced, but Matt Morales ripped a triple into the right-field corner to plate Negret, giving the Legends a 1-0 edge.

The Power answered in the sixth, as Onil Pena benefited from an error by Morales at second base to reach base. Following two wild pitches from new hurler Jon Heasley (2-0), Pena motored to third base, scoring off a sacrifice fly from Rosa a few batters later to tie the game at one.

The game stayed knotted at one until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Jeison Guzman led off the inning with a worm-burner through the infield for a base hit. Following a sacrifice bunt from Rubendy Jaquez, Eric Cole doubled to left-center off Jamal Wade (1-1), allowing Guzman to score and vault Lexington back in front.

Heasley pitched the final four innings, ceding just one hit and an unearned run while fanning five batters..

West Virginia now returns to the friendly confines of Appalachian Power Park for their home opener Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Augusta GreenJackets. RHP Ryne Inman (0-0, 9.00 ERA) will toe the slab for the Power, while RHP Gregory Santos (0-1, 9.00 ERA) heads to the bump for the Greenjackets. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at wvpower.comand via the TuneIn Radio App and MiLB First Pitch App.
