Cincinnati, OH, January 6, 2010 - The Devils had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the second period, but the Cyclones scored the last four of the game, including a hat trick from Maxime Lacroix. Jeff Prough notched his team-leading 13th of the year and Slavomir Tomko scored his first in a Trenton uniform. The Cyclones extended their win streak to four games and take over first place in the North, while the Devils' two game win streak was halted.
A scoreless first period was mostly controlled by the Cyclones, eager to claim their first win at home since December 12, and the home team outshot the visitors 10-3. Minor penalties to Kyle Kucharski andTim Kunes led to two Cincinnati power plays, but Trenton's penalty kill survived, with one shot beating Caruso but ringing off the post.
Four goals were scored in a span of four minutes in the second period starting with Trenton's second power play. Thirty seconds after the call on Ian McKenzie for charging, Jeff Prough buried the first goal of the game off the pass from Tim Kunes at 7:33. Maxime Lacroixresponded a minute later with his first of three goals on the night, with assists to Barret Ehgoetz and all-star rookie Matt Pierce.
Tied 1-1, Chris Poli created a go-ahead goal for Trenton with his eighth assist of the year. His centering effort was backhanded past all-star goalie Jeremy Smith by Tomko at 9:24. Tomko's second point with the Devils and fourth goal of the year put Trenton ahead for only two minutes, before a turnover in the defensive zone led to Mike McLean's ninth of the year to make it 2-2.
Dustin Sproat put the Cyclones in front for the first time at 15:52 withBrock Sheahan and Jimmy Kilpatrick earning assists. His eleventh of the year would be the eventual game winner, but two more goals in the third ensured the victory for Cincinnati. Lacroix got his second of the game from McLean and Pierce at 9:03 and his third, an empty netter from Ehgoetz in the final 15 seconds for the 5-2 final score.
Trenton stopped all five Cyclones power plays, including an extended five-on-three, but only capitalized of one of five of its own chances with an extra man, including one four-on-three chance in the second period. The final five minutes were marked by roughing, fighting and misconduct penalties, including an exchange of blows betweenJustin Coutu and Kilpatrick. Smith notched his tenth win of the year making 22 saves, while Dave Caruso made 25 saves in his tenth loss.
Cincinnati (21-11-0-1, 42pts) finishes the season series with Trenton with five wins in six games. The road trip continues for the Devils (12-16-3-4, 31pts) Friday in Toledo for the first of two against the Walleye (17-13-1-3, 36pts) at 7 p.m.
