Victoria's Shantz Named Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender Of The Week

PRINCETON, N.J. - For the second time in three weeks, David Shantz of the Victoria Salmon Kings is the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Dec. 28-Jan. 3.

He also earned the honor for the week of Dec. 14-20.

The 23 year old went 4-0-0 with back-to-back wins at Utah and at Alaska. He had two shootout wins, 101 saves, a goals-allowed average of 2.40 and a.910 save percentage and improved to 12-3-3. He is 9-1-0 in his last 11 appearances including a nine-game winning streak.

Shantz turned aside 30 shots in a 5-4 win at Utah on Dec. 30 and had 26 saves and stopped four of six shooters in the shootout for a 3-2 win at Utah on Dec. 31. After stopping 18 shots in a 6-2 win at Alaska on Jan. 2, he had 27 saves, including three in overtime, and denied four of five shooters in the shootout for a 3-2 win on Jan. 3.

Shantz continues to lead the league in save percentage with.924 and is tied for the league lead with two shutouts. He ranks second in the ECHL with a goals-allowed average of 2.33 and is tied for third with 12 wins.

The Burlington, Ontario native has played four seasons in the ECHL and is 51-28-11 with four shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.79 and a save percentage of.908 in 96 games with Victoria, Dayton, Elmira and Florida.

Drafted in the second round (37th overall) by the Florida Panthers in the 2004 National Hockey League Entry Draft and under contract to Abbotsford of the American Hockey League, Shantz has played 33 games in the AHL with Rochester and Abbotsford.
