New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

MANCHESTER, N.H. - After struggling for the first few weeks of August, Derrick Chung broke out in a big way on Friday night. The catcher tallied two doubles as part of a three-hit, two-RBI night, albeit in a 9-7 loss to the Akron RubberDucks.

Chung's first hit represented the Fisher Cats' first base runner as he doubled to lead off the third. He was ultimately stranded in the inning, leaving the Fisher Cats (59-66) in a 5-0 hole.

Akron built its early lead against starter Casey Lawrence (L; 9-7). The righty gave up a run in the second before Akron tagged on four more in the third.

After the Ducks (70-56) added another in the fourth, New Hampshire pulled back with two of its own in the bottom of the inning. Melky Mesa doubled in Andy Burns before eventually scoring his own run on a Mike McDade sac fly to make it 6-2.

Akron would add one more in the fifth against Lawrence, building the lead to 7-2 while knocking the Fisher Cats' starter out of the game. Lawrence gave up seven runs on nine hits in a near-repeat performance to his loss in Akron on Sunday.

The Fisher Cats would score the next three runs, picking up a Burns' RBI groundout in the fifth. Chung doubled home two in the sixth to cut Akron's lead to 7-5.

The Ducks wouldn't let their lead slip away entirely as Jaime Pedroza homered in the seventh off Mickey Storey to put Akron back on top by four, 9-5.

New Hampshire netted the game's final two runs with a groundout off the bat of Jorge Flores in the eighth. Cory Aldridge had a pinch-hit single to plate another run in the ninth, but Matt Newman popped out with the bases loaded to end the game in Akron's favor.

Chung was on base four times, including a walk in the ninth-inning rally. It was his three hit game of the season with New Hampshire, and nearly doubled his hits total for the month (he entered the night with four hits in August).

Shawn Morimando (W; 2-4) earned the win with six innings for Akron. He avenged the loss the Fisher Cats tagged on him in Akron last weekend. He gave up five runs (four earned) over six innings, nearly identical to the losing line last week.

The Fisher Cats now have an action-packed Saturday for game two of the series at 7:05 p.m. There will be Atlas Fireworks and a pre-game Fuzzy Hair Hat giveaway for the first 1,000 fans courtesy of ENH Power.
