Adams' Former Family Stunned in Walk-Off Loss

August 15, 2014 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release

BOWIE, MD - Three outs from victory, and one swing changed that. Five batters later, and a despondent group of nine Thunder fielders walked off the field amidst a walk-off homer celebration by David Adams and the Bowie Baysox Friday night.

Before 5,873 fans at Prince George's Stadium, the Trenton Thunder couldn't convert a 4-3 lead entering the bottom of the 9th inning into a series-opening victory as the Baysox clubbed a pair of homers in the inning for a 7-4 win.

The inning began with Nick Goody entering the game after two electric innings from 2014 draft pick Jacob Lindgren who struck out five in a scoreless 7th and 8th. Chris Marrero launched his seventh homer of the season to begin the outing for Goody to tie the game 4-4.

After a walk to Glynn Davis, Mike Yasrtrzemski sacrificed him to second base before Niuman Romero popped up to third base. With the game one out from heading to extra-innings, the Thunder summoned an intentional walk to lefty Buck Britton for Goody to face right-hander David Adams. Adams, who is in his first season outside of the New York Yankees system after being drafted in the 3rd round in 2008, rocked a walk-off homer to left field for the 7-4 win. Adams last played for the Thunder in 2012 and appeared in 125 games for the team between the 2011-2012 seasons.

The Thunder scored in the top of the 2nd inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Bowie quickly responded by loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning and striking for three runs off starting pitcher Jaron Long. Long settled into his outing and went 6.0 innings and didn't allow another run the rest of the way. He exited with a 4-3 lead and in-line for his sixth win of the season but instead was credited with a no-decision.

Offensively, the Thunder used multi-hit games from their No. 1, 3 and 4 hitters to produce some offense against Baysox starting pitcher Anthony Vasquez. Jake Cave finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and Tyler Austin was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and had hit safely in seven consecutive ballgames to raise his batting average to .285 on the season. Gary Sanchez finished with a pair of hits-each brought home a run with two outs for the Thunder offense which scored all four of its runs off Vasquez in his 6.2 innings of work.

The Thunder are 0-4 at Prince George's Stadium this season and just 1-9 overall against Bowie this season in 10 ballgames.

Trenton gets back to action Saturday in Game 2 of a three-game series against the BaySox. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. with a 6:20 p.m. Trenton Thunder pre-game show which can be heard on 91.3 FM or on www.trentonthunder.com.
